Why did I receive a notice from the Income Tax Department?

The Income Tax department's software sends automated messages to assessees whenever they spot an irregularity between the taxes paid and returns filed by the assessee.

You may receive an Income Tax Notice for some of the following reasons:

  1. A mismatch in TDS
  2. Not Quoting or Misquoting PAN number
  3. An incomplete IT return
  4. Discrepancies in the return you filed (according to the I-T Department)
  5. Tax Returns Not Filed
  6. Non-disclosure of income from certain sources

The reason for receiving the notice is usually evident by looking at the notice. However, depending on the reason, the method for filing the response differs.
