The Principal Short Term Debt Fund is an open-ended, short-term debt scheme. It seeks to generate regular income and capital appreciation by investing in debt securities and related instruments. Further, it endeavors to preserve capital and has been designed to generate stable returns over shorter-term investment horizons.
Pros & Cons of Principal Short Term Debt Fund
- The scheme predominantly invests in debt securities (including securitized debt and money market instruments) in such a manner that the Macaulay Duration of the portfolio is between 1 and 3 years.
- The shorter-term ensures lower volatility from interest rate movements. As on September 30, 2018, the scheme is ranked 3 under CRISIL’s Short Duration Fund category.
- Further, it has generated returns of 8.13% per year over the last 10 years (as on January 04, 2019).

The scheme was launched on 09 May 2003 by Principal Mutual Fund.
ii) Risk Level
The scheme invests in debt securities and money market instruments keeping the Macaulay Duration of the portfolio between 1 and 3 years. It has a moderate risk level associated with it.
iii) Redemption
The minimum redemption amount is Rs. 500 or 50 units. Further, the redemption proceeds are dispatched within 10 business days of the receipt of a valid redemption request.
iv) Fund Manager(s)
Mr. Gurvinder Singh Wasan is the Fund Manager of the Principal Short Term Debt Fund since April 2011.

The following taxes are applicable to income arising from investing in this scheme: 1. STCG from the debt component is added to the investor’s income and taxed as per the income-tax slab. 2. LTCG component is taxed at 20% with indexation benefits.
