CHAPTER 2

The CFO, still reeling from the genie's sudden appearance, was now faced with a new, more pressing concern. He looked around the office for some inspiration. All he could see was an endless sea of paperwork. The GST notice on top of his inbox caught his eye.Yes! The notices, that’s the one I want gone.

The CFO had just finished signing a hefty penalty check, a bitter pill to swallow. It was the latest in a long line of GST notices that had been plaguing his company. The relentless ongoing audits, investigations, and demands had turned what was once a simple task into a complex, time-consuming ordeal. "I wish I could turn all my GST filings into a magic carpet and fly away from all this paperwork," he sighed.

As the CFO of a publicly-traded company, every action carried immense weight. A single oversight, no matter how minor, could escalate into a major crisis, threatening the company’s financial health. The constant scrutiny from investors, analysts, and auditors created a high-pressure environment where every decision, every delay, and every error was magnified.

The news was filled with examples of businesses caught in the crossfire:‍‍

The intricacies of GST compliance, he realised the gravity of the situation. The government's focus on real-time tracking, coupled with the increasing use of AI for scrutiny, had significantly heightened the risk of receiving a notice or a hefty penalty. The CFO knew he had to act swiftly and decisively.

Cut to the CFO’s office, he could feel his heart pounding. The genie's offer, once a fun distraction, now seemed like a lifeline. "Three wishes," he muttered again, "could they be the answer?"

But what should his first wish be? A wish for perfect compliance, a wish for a team of experienced tax experts, or perhaps a wish for a genie-like solution to every problem? The possibilities were endless, but the stakes were high.

A flood of memories washed over him. His team spent countless nights pouring over new regulations and discussing the latest GST updates. The constant fear of unexpected tax notices added to the stress. He longed for a break, a chance to relax and enjoy the Mediterranean sun with a cocktail in hand. He knew his team deserved a break too, after all their hard work.

He turned to the genie. "I wish... I wish for all these notices to vanish," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "All of them."

A mischievous smile spread across the genie's face. "Poof!" he exclaimed, and with a flick of his wrist, the pile of notices and the emails in his inbox dissolved into thin air. The CFO's eyes widened in disbelief!

The CFO closed his eyes, savouring the moment of peace. He had finally found a solution to his problems. As he opened his eyes, he noticed that the pile of notices had vanished, but the underlying issues remained. The complex tax regulations, the ever-changing rules, the risk of human error – they were still there.

A chill ran down his spine as a realisation dawned upon him. The genie, with its magical powers, had simply erased the symptoms, not the disease. The root cause of the problem –the complexity and ever-evolving nature of GST compliance, the TASK HELL – remained.

A question nagged him in the back of his mind. Was this a dangerous game of smoke and mirrors? Should he have asked for a sustainable solution, a system that could adapt to the ever-changing landscape of tax compliance.

As the genie faded away, a sense of dread washed over the CFO. He had traded one problem for another, a Faustian bargain that could have dire consequences. The future of his company, and perhaps his own career, hung in the balance.
