Voter ID Search by Name: How to Check Your Name in Voter List?

The Election Commission of India (ECI) looks into the annual revision of names and associated details of existing voters annually. This revision process usually takes place in October or November, and the updated voter list is published around January or February. 

During the revision process, ECI authorities eliminate the names of dead voters from this list. It also updates any changes in the details of existing voters. Therefore, once the new voter list is published, every voter must check if their names are on it. How to Check If Your Name is on the Voter List?

You can follow any of the methods provided below to search for your name in the voter list. 

Online Check via NVSP Portal

Here is the step-by-step guide to checking your name in the voter list online: 

Step 1: Open the official National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP). 

Step 2: Click on the ‘Search in Electoral Roll’ tab. 

Step 3: A new page will open. Select any one of the options - ‘Search by Details’, ‘Search by EPIC’ or ‘Search by Mobile’.

Step 4: Choose your state and preferred language option from the drop-down list. 

Step 5: Enter the required details and captcha code and click ‘Search’.

Step 6: Your name will be displayed on the screen along with the voter details when your name is there on the voter list. However, if the system shows as no record found, then your name is not added to the voter list, and you will have to contact the state election office to add your name to the voter list.

Check via SMS

If you cannot access the NVSP website, there are other alternatives as well. You can follow the steps below to check your name in the voter list via SMS. 

Step 1: Type the following message and send it to 1950:

ECI <space> <your EPIC No> 

Step 2: You will receive an auto-generated text message displaying your EPIC number along with your name and other details in the voter list. 

Check via Helpline Number

You can also call the Election Commission of India’s helpline number to search for your name on Voter's card. Here are the steps to check for your name in voters’ list with a phone number:

Step 1: Dial 1950 on your phone. 

Step 2: An interactive voice response will ask you to choose your language preference. Follow the instructions to complete the further steps. 

Step 3: Select the voter ID status option. You might also need to provide your reference or EPIC number, so consider keeping this document handy. 

Why Check Your Name is on the Voter List?

Elections in India happen every five years. During this gap, several things can come up, like changes in locations, changes in name, etc. Such information must be updated on your voter ID before the election procedure begins.
