Under this scheme, every eligible person gets 10 kg of rice free of cost every month. This helps families struggling to make ends meet have at least one essential food item regularly stocked at home.
Families that don’t have to spend money on basic food grains can redirect their limited income towards other essential needs, like sending kids to school, getting medical help, or learning new skills. In the long run, this kind of support can help people become independent.
The scheme aims to reduce hunger and improve nutrition by guaranteeing a supply of rice. For families living below the poverty line, this can make a real difference in their daily lives and health.
The scheme is specifically designed for families in the Below-Poverty-Line (BPL) category. These are households that often skip meals or can’t afford necessities. This initiative brings them some relief and stability.
To receive the benefits, families must show a valid BPL ration card. The system uses this card to confirm you're eligible and track the distribution of rice each month.
Due to a rice supply issue, the Karnataka government initially provided ₹34 per kg as cash through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into beneficiaries’ accounts instead of giving the additional 5 kg of rice. However, as of February 2025, the state has restarted in-kind distribution of the full 10 kg rice quota.
If you want to check the status of the DBT amounts:
Step 1: Go to the official Karnataka Food Department website.
