The government of Tamil Nadu has launched various schemes for providing financial assistance to the people in the state. One such scheme is the Pudhumai Penn scheme which gives financial assistance to girls to complete their education.

What is Pudhumai Penn Scheme?

The Tamil Nadu Government launched the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance scheme to increase the enrollment ratio of girls from government schools and higher education institutions. The Pudhumai Penn scheme provides the benefits under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Higher Education Assurance Scheme and takes care of new student registrations.

The Pudhumai Penn scheme provides monetary assistance to girls and young women enrolled in government educational institutions. It aims to improve the general well-being of female students and encourage them to continue their studies. It provides financial assistance to economically weaker families who cannot send their daughters to schools and colleges due to financial constraints.

Pudhumai Penn Scheme Eligibility

• The applicant must be a citizen living in Tamil Nadu.
• The applicant must be a student.
• The applicant must be studying in the 6th-12th standard.
• The applicant must be a girl studying in government schools or higher education institutes.

What is the benefit of the Pudhumai Penn Scheme? 

• The Pudhumai Penn scheme provides financial assistance of Rs.1,000 per month to girls studying in 6th-12th classes in government schools till they complete their UG degree, ITI, diploma or any other recognised course, irrespective of the field.
• The amount of Rs.1,000 is disbursed directly to the student’s bank account every month.
• The Pudhumai Penn scheme encourages female students to continue their education by providing financial assistance, boosting their confidence, and discouraging parents from allowing their daughters to marry at a young age.
• It aims to help 6 lakh female students annually and has been budgeted at Rs.698 crore.
• Debit cards were provided to 613 students under this scheme during its initial phase.
• The Pudhumai Penn scheme benefits around 6,500 students in the Tiruchi district enrolled in science, arts and engineering institutions.

How To Apply For Pudhumai Penn Scheme Online?

The students can apply to this scheme only through their schools/institutions and not directly. The government conducted a camp for girl students registration till 11 November 2022 in the respective colleges/institutes. Girl students had to submit their details along with documents for registration under this scheme to their respective institutions, schools or colleges. 

Girl students who missed out on registration during the camp organised by the government can register for this scheme by contacting the college/school principal. The students can also apply online to the scheme with the help of their college/institute principal. The online process to apply for this scheme is as follows:

• Visit the Penkalvi portal.
• Click on the ‘Institutes/College’ tab.
• Enter the username and password of the institute/college with the help of the principal and click on the ‘Login’ button.
• Fill in the particulars of the applicants.
• Submit the application with the documents.

The Pudhumai Penn scheme helps girls in Tamil Nadu to complete their higher education by providing them Rs. 1,000 per month. It ensures socio-economic empowerment of women and prevents drop out of girls from schools.
