The voting for the Lok Sabha election in 2024 has started. Polling for the 18th General Election is being conducted in seven phases between April 19 and June 1.

Many states, including Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Chandigarh, will witness the polling for the general election in the seventh phase, which are scheduled for June 1.

The Election Commission of India maintains a constituency-wise voter list wherein all individuals who are eligible to vote are listed. Thus, before going to vote, it becomes necessary to download the Voter list to confirm successful verification of their details and to check which electoral district or polling station they are assigned to.

Keep reading this article to learn about Voter list download and how you can check your name in the list.

What is a Voter List?

A Voter List is the list of all the voters residing in a particular constituency or ward. This list is maintained and updated by the Election Commission of India through its regional offices. If your name is on the voter list, only then are you allowed to cast your vote. Such is the significance of the voter list that if your name is on it, you do not need a Voter ID card to cast your vote. You can take any valid proof of identity issued by the Government and cast your vote.

A Voter list contains records (name, age, sex, father’s/husband’s name, address, and serial number) of people who are eligible to vote, i.e., voter ID holders or applicants. This list is prepared and made available to everyone much before the election is conducted.

Apart from the mentioned details, the electoral district and polling station assigned to each voter are also included in the Voter list. Eligible voters and first-time applicants can access the Voter list either online on the official NVSP website or offline by visiting an election booth.

How to Download The Voter List?

Follow the below steps to download the Voter list:

Step 1: Log in to the NVSP Electoral Roll page.

Step 2: Select the state, district, assembly constituency and language and enter the captcha code.

Why should you check your name in the Voter List 2024?

Wondering why you should check if your name is on the voter list? The Election Commission of India periodically updates the voter list. If it finds any discrepancies in details, the names of such voters are removed from the list. Some of the reasons for removal of name from voter list are:

  • Death of the Voter
  • Fake Voter Details
  • Incorrect Particulars
  • Change of Address/ No longer residing at the given address

If your name has been removed from the voter list due to any of the above reasons or by mistake, you cannot vote in the upcoming elections. It is therefore, vital for you to perform a regular voter list search

Apart from this, you should also check the presence of your name in the Voter list for the following reasons:

  • Verify whether all details are correct and confirm that you are eligible to vote in the upcoming election process.
  • Prior checking also allows you to raise complaints or report an error (in case of any information inconsistency) to concerned authorities. This ensures the possibility of correction of your details before the election begins.
  • Both the actions of making the Voter list available to the public and voters confirming their eligibility (by looking up their names in the list) should be done at least ten days before the election. This ensures errors are corrected as early as possible. Once voting is set to begin, changes are not permitted.
