Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has said that the deadline of July 1 is ‘impractical’ and ‘undesirable’ and has asked the government to push the implementation to October. Speaking in Delhi, Mr. Chidambaram said that the GST Bill in its present form was not ideal and would require amendments in the next two years.
He also said that implementing GST in a haste would go against the majority of SMEs in the country who may not be as well versed with the intricacies of online tax filing as the big corporates, and who may need more time to get used to the new tax regime.
