Factors That Affect Today's Silver Rate in Surat

Import Duties and GST

India imports most of its silver from other countries. The central government charges a customs duty on these imports, and this cost gets added to the base price before silver reaches any shop in Surat. On top of that, a 3% GST applies to all silver purchases. These two charges mean the price you pay in Surat will always be higher than the international spot rate.

Local Market Demand

Surat is known worldwide as the diamond capital, but it also has an active silver market. The city has a large trading community, hundreds of thousands of diamond and textile workers, and a culture that treats silver as both a practical purchase and a traditional one. The biggest buying surge comes during the Dhanteras, Diwali, and Bestu Varas window, the peak silver season across Gujarat.

Navratri brings demand for oxidised silver jewellery worn during garba nights. Ganesh Chaturthi has its own Surat tradition at Dalia Street in Mahidharpura, where the main idol has been decorated with over 25 kg of gold and silver ornaments every year since 1972. The main buying areas are Ghod Dod Road for retail and Mahidharpura for wholesale, with over 479 silver jewellery manufacturers in that area alone.

Gold Price Correlation

Gold and silver prices generally move together, but silver swings more sharply on both sides. Gujarat has a per capita income of Rs 3,00,957 as of 2024-25, well above the national average. In Surat, where diamond workers, textile merchants, and small business owners form a large part of the population, many buyers watch the gold to silver ratio.

When gold gets too expensive, buyers shift to silver for festivals and gifting. Surat has had silver in its markets for over 400 years, going back to when the English and Dutch East India Companies imported gold and silver through the Surat port in the early 1600s.

Industrial Demand

The biggest real consumer of silver near Surat is the solar panel manufacturing cluster. Goldi Solar, India's largest solar PV module manufacturer with 15.2 GW capacity, operates at Pipodara, Navsari, Kosamba, and Nana Borsara, all near the city. Solex Energy (2.0 GW) and Solitech Solar (2.0 GW) are also Surat based. Solar panels use silver paste for cell metallization, making this a genuine demand source.

In Mahidharpura, 479 plus silver jewellery manufacturers consume silver as raw material, making jewellery the city's largest silver consuming sector. Diamond polishing, which Surat is most famous for, does not use silver. The textile industry, despite its size, also does not consume silver in manufacturing.

Buying Silver in Surat

Silver Coins and Bars: The most common form for investment buyers. Coins come in 10 gram to 100 gram weights, bars from 100 grams to 1 kg. Available at shops along Ghod Dod Road and bullion dealers in Mahidharpura. Making charges on coins and bars are the lowest among all silver forms.

Silver Jewellery: Oxidised silver is particularly popular in Surat, especially during Navratri for garba nights. Sterling silver (925 purity) is widely available, and Mahidharpura has become a hub for diamond studded silver jewellery using lab grown stones. Making charges range from Rs 50 to Rs 300 per gram.

Silver Utensils and Pooja Items: Silver plates, glasses, diyas, and Ganesh idols are standard Dhanteras and wedding purchases. Maharani by Rungta's on Ghod Dod Road specialises in this category. Silver Tulsi Vrindavan sets are popular in Vaishnav Gujarati families.

Silver Idols and Temple Items: Surat's Jain community sources silver angi (deity coverings), pichwai (backdrop art), rath (chariots), and temple door cladding from Gujarat artisans. These are high value, often custom ordered.

Zari Thread Silver: Surat's zari craft, with a GI tag since 2010, uses real silver wire called badla wound over base yarn. While not an investment form, it is a historic silver use specific to Surat, supporting about 1.5 lakh stakeholders.

Where to Buy Silver in Surat

Ghod Dod Road and Athwalines is the main retail belt. Kalamandir Jewellers, founded 1986 in Kosamba with a 30,000 sq ft Surat showroom since 2013, has a 4.9 rating with over 30,000 reviews. TBZ (Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri), dating to 1864, has its Surat store at SNS House near Lal Bunglow since 2007. Malabar Gold and Diamonds is on Ghod Dod Road near Rangila Park. Kalyan Jewellers is in the Forum Building. Tanishq has three stores. Maharani by Rungta's, opened 2018 at Westfield Mall, is Gujarat's biggest silver showroom.

Parle Point has D. Khushalbhai Jewellers, a heritage store founded 1950 in Junagadh, now at Khandwala Estate with a 4.9 rating.

Mahidharpura is the silver wholesale hub. Beyond being the world's largest diamond market, it houses 479 plus silver manufacturers. Moon Star Impex (bullion, est. 2009, 5.0 rating) is at Rangrej Tower. Veer Jewels on Bhagal Road specialises in 925 sterling silver. Jain Bullion in Swastik Arcade, Parsi Gali, is a leading bullion dealer with a live trading app.

Chowk Bazar and Chauta Bazar form the old city market with trading going back to the early 1700s. Joyalukkas has stores at Palanpur Jakatnaka and Mota Varachha. Sangeeta Boochra, tracing its origins to 1897, recently opened in Surat.

Silver Purity Guide

Knowing purity is really important before buying silver in Surat. Always check for a BIS hallmark showing the BIS logo, purity grade, and jeweller's mark.

999 Silver: 99.9% pure, used for coins, bars, and investment items.

970 Silver: 97% pure, used in some premium items.

925 Silver: 92.5% pure, the sterling silver standard. Common in Mahidharpura's output.

900 Silver: 90% pure, found in some traditional items.

835 Silver: 83.5% pure, less common but seen in older pieces.

Documents and Tax When Buying Silver in Surat

For any purchase above Rs 2 lakh, you need a PAN card. For purchases above Rs 10 lakh, additional KYC documents may be needed. Every purchase should come with a GST bill showing 3% GST separately, listing weight, purity, making charges, and total. Making charges attract 5% GST. Keep this bill for resale or wealth declaration. If buying from bullion dealers in Mahidharpura, confirm they issue a proper GST invoice rather than an informal receipt.

Silver as an Investment in Surat

Is Silver a Good Investment

Silver has consistently beaten inflation over the past two decades. In Surat, the working population includes a diamond polishing workforce of 800,000 to 1.5 million alongside 1.4 million textile workers. Silver sits in a price range accessible to this wide earning base. The growing solar sector near the city adds industrial demand that supports prices beyond jewellery buying. The annual Dhanteras, Diwali, and Bestu Varas window, with its Chopda Pujan tradition of worshipping account books alongside silver purchases, creates a reliable demand cycle.

Why Surat Residents Invest in Silver

Affordable Entry Point: With silver priced at a fraction of gold, a diamond polishing worker or textile loom operator can start with a few thousand rupees. A 100 gram bar costs far less than a small gold coin, making it the easiest way for working families to build savings in precious metals.

Hedge Against Inflation: In a city where incomes fluctuate with global diamond demand and textile cycles, silver holds value over time and acts as a cushion when the rupee weakens. Families buying silver during Dhanteras for generations have seen their holdings grow significantly.

Cultural Stability: Buying silver during Dhanteras and Diwali is not just tradition in Gujarat but a financial habit built into the calendar. Bestu Varas and Chopda Pujan customs tie silver to business prosperity. This means demand never drops to zero, giving silver a steadiness that purely financial assets do not always have.

Cultural Significance of Silver in Surat

Surat has been a silver trading city for over 400 years. When the English East India Company arrived at its port in 1608, their imports consisted mainly of gold and silver. Through the 17th and 18th centuries, silver was a primary commodity flowing through the harbour. That long commercial relationship still shapes how the city treats the metal today.

Weddings and Rituals

Gujarati weddings in Surat involve silver at multiple stages. The todi, a pair of silver anklets, is a specifically silver piece in the bridal set. The kaliganthi is a bridal amulet necklace with such cultural standing that a historic piece is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Silver pooja thalis, Ganesh idols, and diyas are standard wedding gifts. In Vaishnav families, a Silver Tulsi Vrindavan set is an important exchange. The kandora (waist belt) and damani (forehead ornament) are other traditional silver pieces.

Surat's Dawoodi Bohra community has held the Rasme Saifee collective wedding since 1586 AD. Silver items and jewellery are part of these celebrations, connecting the community's trading identity with its wedding customs.

Festivals and Seasonal Demand

The Dhanteras, Diwali, and Bestu Varas window is the biggest silver buying period in Surat. Dhanteras is specifically for purchasing metals. Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year, follows right after Diwali. On Bestu Varas, the Chopda Pujan involves worshipping new account books, and business owners place silver coins alongside their ledgers. This three day window accounts for a large share of annual silver sales.

Ganesh Chaturthi at Dalia Street in Mahidharpura is a distinctive tradition. Since 1972, merchant communities have adorned the main idol with over 25 kg of gold and silver ornaments, including a 7 kg silver mouse vahana. The festival draws around 500,000 visitors over 10 days. During Navratri, oxidised silver jewellery becomes a major seller as women buy pieces for nine nights of garba and dandiya.

Local Craftsmanship and Heritage

Surat's most distinctive silver craft is zari making, which received a GI tag in 2010. Real silver wire, called badla, is wound over base yarn to create decorative thread for sarees and textiles. This industry dates to the Silk Road era and grew under Mughal patronage. The Surat Jari Manufacturers Association represents this sector, supporting about 1.5 lakh stakeholders.

Mahidharpura is both the world's largest diamond market and a silver jewellery manufacturing centre with 479 plus units. The SJMA, established 2016, promotes "Make in Surat" with a Vision 2031 plan. The shared skill pool between diamond setting and silver work has created a niche for diamond studded 925 silver jewellery. Gujarat's Jain community drives demand for temple silver, with workshops producing silver angi, pichwai, rath, and door cladding for derasars across India.

Economic and Cultural Importance

Silver has been part of Surat's commercial identity since the Mughal era, when the port was a primary entry point for precious metals. The Diamond Bourse, opened December 2023, has concentrated trading activity.

The SJMA positions the city as a complete jewellery production centre beyond diamonds. Heritage retailers like Kalamandir and D. Khushalbhai anchor the retail side, while Mahidharpura's manufacturers drive wholesale and exports. For a city built on trade, silver remains a natural part of how Surat does business.
