When will GST Enrollment Reopen?

Updated on: Jul 21st, 2021

GST Enrollment is scheduled to reopen again on June 25th for businesses that had missed the earlier deadline for enrollment. Many businesses have missed the deadline to enroll under Goods and Services Tax. As per the government data, 60.5 lakh entities have enrolled themselves with the Goods and Services Tax Network since November of 2016. However, approximately 2 million businesses are yet to enroll on the GST portal. The migration process of taxpayers who are already registered under Value Added Tax of state government or Services Tax, Excise Duty under Central Board of Excise and Customs was initiated from November 8, 2016. The initial deadline to complete the enrollment was January 31, 2017, however, this deadline was extended multiple times, until April 30. Since then, there has been panic among businesses which could not get their businesses enrolled. But the good news is, this window for enrollment will again open from June 25.

Why was Enrollment Closed?

GSTN is building one of the most complex business software that will revolutionize how India does business and adheres to GST’s compliances. It is going to be one of the biggest collaborative tax compliance systems. To ensure that all logic is tested adequately, it needed to be shared with stakeholders for extensive testing. This was one of the reasons why curtains were pulled down on the enrollment process so that it does not affect the system testing.

However, enrollment will again start from June 25, 2017, as stated recently by Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia.

What Will be the Period of Enrollment?

GST enrollment will be opened for one final time from June 25. The government is very serious about implementing GST on time and is taking all steps possible to ensure the transition is done before launch. However, even if businesses miss this deadline they should not panic. Under GST law, anyone registered in the VAT regime will have time and opportunity to transition to the new regime since the PAN number will still be valid.
