UAN Activation: How to Activate UAN Online on EPFO Portal

UAN is a 12-digit identification number issued by the EPFO to all employees. To avail of the various services offered by EPFO, such as balance check and passbook download, it is necessary to activate the UAN.

UAN Activation via UAN Portal No Longer Available

UAN activation via Aadhaar OTP (portal) and Membership ID has officially been discontinued. UAN can now be activated through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication via the UMANG app. The web portal steps below are retained for reference for users. 

What is UAN Activation?

UAN activation is the process of enabling your UAN for online use. Without activation of UAN, you cannot log in to the EPFO portal, and you cannot access the services offered by EPFO. It can be made through EPFO portal, through 6 simple steps.

 Requirements for UAN Activation

• Aadhaar number
• Mobile number registered with your employer
• The following are required to complete KYC post activation
• Bank account number and IFSC code
• PAN

How to Activate UAN using UMANG - Face Authentication

To activate your UAN, you will need to install the UMANG app and Aadhar Face RD app, and use Aadhar OTP to complete the activation process using online verification.

1. Open the UMANG app and go to the ‘services’ tab.
2. In all services, scroll down to find ‘EPFO’.
3. Under ‘UAN Services Through Face Authentication’, choose ‘UAN Activation’.
4. Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to it.
5. Enter the OTP sent to your mobile number, and start scanning.
6. Authenticate your UAN using your phone camera.
8. After successful verification, you will receive your UAN and a temporary password on your registered mobile number. Your photo and address would be updated in the EPFO database.

Activate UAN Online via UAN Portal

1. Go to the UAN portal and click on ‘Activate UAN’ under the ‘Important Links’ heading.
2. Select the UAN option, enter your UAN, Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, mobile number, and captcha code, tick the consent box, and click on the ‘Get Authorization Pin’ button.
3. A new screen will appear on your desktop, where your details will be displayed. Make sure that all the information is correct.
4. Now, you will have to click on the ‘I Agree’ checkbox. Enter the four-digit OTP and click on ‘Validate OTP and Activate UAN’.
5. Once the OTP is verified, the UAN will be activated.

Note: Upon UAN activation, you will receive a password on your registered mobile number to log in to your account. 

Currently, UAN activation via Aadhaar OTP or membership ID has been discontinued. UAN can now be activated only through Aadhar OTP through UMANG face authentication.

What to do after UAN Activation?

• Once your UAN activation is complete, you can complete the KYC update. Enter your bank account details and PAN, and validate your Aadhaar details to complete the KYC process.
• You can download your UAN card and passbook for cross verification of the employer’s contribution to PF
• For the smooth settlement of PF funds in the event of death or disability, complete the PF nomination requirements.
