EPF Mobile Number Registration

Updated on :

08 min read.

The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement benefits scheme for salaried employees.  The Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) regulates the EPF scheme. When an employee is registered under the EPF scheme, he/she is assigned a Universal Account Number (UAN).

A UAN is a unique number given to every EPFO member contributing to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) scheme. When the UAN is generated, the EPFO member must activate the UAN by logging into the EPFO member portal. The EPFO member can avail of various services related to EPFO, such as withdrawal of EPF money, viewing the EPFO passbook, etc., on the portal.

The members can also easily avail of the EPFO services using their mobile numbers through SMS. They must register their mobile number in the EPFO’s database online through the EPF member portal. It is mandatory for new members to register their mobile numbers when activating the UAN or logging into the EPFO member portal for the first time. It is also very easy to change the mobile number through the portal.

EPF Services Through Mobile

An EPF member can avail of many services through the SMS service or the Umang app after the mobile number is registered with the EPFO. They can get the following EPF services through the SMS on the registered mobile number:

  • Viewing UAN status (Active or inactive).
  • Obtaining EPF details.
  • Checking EPF balance by sending an SMS from the registered mobile number.
  • Checking the EPF claim status.
  • Receiving notification of EPF transfer/withdrawal via SMS after initiation of the process to credit the PF amount to the bank account.
  • Viewing the bank account, PAN card and Aadhaar linking status.
  • Receiving the SMS of the contributions made to the EPF account every month.
  • Transferring the EPF amount from the previous member ID to the present one.
  • Receiving the OTP for authentication and validation for various online EPFO services.

Online Process to Register Mobile Number on EPFO Portal

When the UAN is generated, members have to activate the UAN by visiting the EPFO member portal. The members can also register their mobile numbers while activating the UAN. The process to register a mobile number with the EPFO while activating the UAN are as follows:

  • Visit EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal.
  • Click on the ‘Activate UAN’ link under the ‘Important Links’ option present on the right side of the screen.
  • Enter the UAN, Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, mobile number and captcha code. Click on the ‘Get Authorization Pin’ button.
  • An OTP will be sent to the mobile number entered on the previous page.
  • Enter the OTP to activate the UAN. The mobile number to which the OTP is sent to activate the UAN will also be registered with the EPFO as the member’s registered mobile number.
  • After UAN activation, a password will be sent to the registered mobile number to access the EPF account. Once the mobile number is registered with the UAN, the member will receive all SMS communications from the EPFO on that number, including the OTP.

Online Process to Change Mobile Number on EPFO Portal

When a member changes his/her mobile number, he/she must update the new number on the EPFO portal to continue availing of SMS services. When the new number is not updated on the portal, the member will not be able to receive information about his/her PF account. The process to change/update the registered mobile number is as follows:

  • Visit EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal.
  • Login by entering the UAN, password, and captcha code and clicking on the ‘Sign in’ button.
  • Click on the ‘Contact Details’ option under the ‘Manage’ tab.
  • Select the ‘Change Mobile No.’ option.
  • Enter the new mobile number twice and click on the ‘Get Mobile OTP’ button.
  • The OTP will be sent to the new mobile number.
  • Enter the OTP and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • The new mobile number will be changed/updated in the EPFO portal.

Online Process to Update Mobile Number When Password is Forgotten

When members forget the password, they will not be able to log in to the EPFO member portal. When they cannot log in, they cannot update the registered mobile number. However, the members can reset their passwords and update their mobile numbers. The process of updating mobile number when the members forget the password is as follows:

  • Enter the UAN and captcha, and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • Enter the name, date of birth, and gender and click on the ‘Verify’ button.
  • Enter the captcha, Aadhar Number, select the consent and click on the ‘Verify’ button.
  • Enter the new mobile number linked with Aadhaar and click on the ‘Get OTP’ button.
  • Enter the OTP received on the new mobile number and click on the ‘Verify’ button.
  • Enter the new password twice and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • The password will be changed, and the new mobile number will be updated with the EPFO portal.
