Definition of third party insurancee
- It is known as an act only cover.
- It is a form of liability insurance that the owner of the car/bike/vehicle purchases for protection against the claims of a third party.
- Any damages or losses suffered by the third party in case of an accident must be made good by the third party insurance holder.
- In case of property damages, insurance companies usually cover up to a maximum sum of Rs. 7,50,000 only.
- The third party will be paid for his or her medical expenses, compensation in case of any bodily disfigurement and also for his or her loss of earnings. Basic legal expenses of the insured will also be provided for under the insurance policy.

- Purchasing a third party insurance on the purchase of an automobile is mandatory under law.
- The Motor Vehicles Act states that driving an uninsured vehicle will attract a fine and three months imprisonment.

Exclusions Under Third Party Insurance
- The person driving the car was either underage or lacked a valid driver’s license.
- The vehicle was being used for any illegal purpose at the time of the accident.
- The accident was caused as a result of consumption of intoxicating substances.
- The accident was deliberate.
- The vehicle is stolen thereafter and is not in the possession of the insured.
- The insurance will not cover for repair of damages to the insured’s vehicle or if the insured has suffered some bodily injury himself.
Premium of Third Party Insurance
- The premium amount that is to be paid is low and is fixed the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.
- Individual Insurance Companies cannot vary the premium charged for this type of insurance.
