Introduction to Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT)
In the business world, having knowledge of certain tools which would make the business management run smoothly is essential. Program Evaluation Review Technique or PERT is one such tool which helps in project management. PERT charts are often a preferred representation of the project’s analysis over other charts like Gantt charts.
What is Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT)?
The Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) is a statistical tool which was first developed in the United States in the year 1958. This method is used to analyse the tasks involved in the project by breaking down the individual tasks which helps in the analysis.
This tool is often used in project management as it provides a graphical representation of the project’s timeline and helps in the complete analysis of the project. The Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) chart has circles or rectangles which are used to represent project events or milestones.
The PERT chart is a useful tool in project management as it allows the project managers to evaluate the project timeline and progress which includes the time and resources required for the project to be completed.
The Program Evaluation Review technique (PERT) can be implemented in three steps—the first step is to determine the tasks required in the project and the order in which these tasks need to be performed. Next step is to create a networking diagram which forms the chart. The last step is to determine the course of the project and the slacks in time while completing the project.
Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) charts can be interpreted by the direction of arrows which indicates the flow and sequence of events required for completing the given project. There are dotted lines on the chart which indicate dummy activities. All in all, the PERT chart as a whole determines the time it will take to finalise the project while also helping to analyse the various tasks that form the project.
