Introduction
A missent item is a check written by a bank customer that is not submitted to the right bank. This situation can arise due to a clerical error by an employee of the bank, depository institution, or postal error.
What is Missent Item?
Missent items can cause inconvenience from the delay in posting to the account. There are possibilities for customers to think that the check has been cleared, and they may end up making other purchases through the account. It may lead to account overdraft. Banks take care to avoid such situations.
Account Holder Liability
Though it is not usual, the paying bank may hold its customer liable for missent items. This happens when the delay in processing or missending happens as a result of the incorrect assessment of the instructions given by the paying bank's customer.
