Passport Seva Online Portal – Passport Application made simple

Earlier, obtaining a passport was an arduous task in itself. First, you had to fill in the forms manually and then stand in long queues outside the local passport office awaiting your turn. And when your turn was about to come, you were told that the office has closed for the day or that your documents are incomplete.

Thanks to the Passport Seva Online Portal, getting a new passport or renewing an existing passport has become simple and easy in India.

About Passport Seva Online Portal

Established by the Ministry of External Affairs in partnership with Tata Consultancy Services, Passport Seva is an excellent example of a Public-Private Partnership. The Ministry of External Affairs has retained sovereign functions like verification, granting, and issuance of a passport as well as ownership of core assets including data and information of the applicants. Passport Seva Online enables Indian citizens to complete a range of tasks related to obtaining a passport online. Users can perform the following functions on the Passport Seva Online Portal:

  • Apply for a new passport
  • Apply for renewal of a passport
  • Apply for re-issue of lost or damaged passport
  • Download the application form for Police Clearance Certificate
  • Download the application form for Surrender Certificate
  • Download the application form for Identity Certificate

Passport Seva online portal offers complete information regarding the documents required and process to be followed for obtaining any of the documents mentioned above. You can complete these steps online. But in some instances, you will be required to take a printout of the application form, book an appointment and then visit your nearest Passport Seva Kendra. To be able to use the facilities made available under Passport Seva, it is mandatory to register for Passport Seva Online first.

Passport Seva Registration

Passport is must if you wish to travel abroad. In addition to being an important travel document, passport serves as a proof of identity and address. It is essential for a user to register on the Passport Seva online portal to be able to avail the services made available after Passport Seva Login. Here are detailed stepwise instructions to help you with Passport Seva Registration: –

  1. Log on to the official passport seva website, i.e. https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink
  2. Towards the left side of our screen, you will be able to see a button in orange colour “New User”? Register now. Click on the link
  3. This will open up a form which you need to complete with the required details.
  4. Make sure that the radio button is set to “Passport Office.”
  5. Select the nearest passport office for your city from the drop-down list.
  6. Now, enter your personal details as prompted on the screen in the relevant fields.
  7. You will now need to select a login id and password, as per terms and conditions mentioned on the portal. Re-enter the password to confirm.
  8. You will now be asked to choose a hint question and provide its answer. This will help you retrieve your details if you ever lose your login credentials.
  9. Enter the captcha code as shown on the screen and click on the button titled “Register”.
  10. Your account is now created, and you can log-in using these credentials from next time.

Now, you can proceed ahead with passport seva login and use the facilities offered by the Passport Seva.  

Passport Seva Login

Passport Seva login provides you with all the options that are required by you to obtain a new or renew an existing passport. Here is a stepwise guide to help you with the process: –

  1. Log on to the official passport seva website, i.e. https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink
  2. Towards the left side of our screen, you will be able to see a button in green colour “Existing User”? Login. Click on the link.
  3. You will be prompted to enter your User Id and password on the next screen. Enter the same details that you obtained on completion of the registration process.
  4. Now, you can choose between the four options that you see on your screen:
    • Fresh Passport/Passport Reissue
    • Identity Certificate
    • Police Clearance Certificate
    • Diplomatic Passport/Official Passport
  5. Now, select the relevant option, i.e. Fresh passport/Passport Reissue.
  6. Select the option “Normal” on the next page and proceed further.
  7. You have the option to download the form, fill it manually, and then upload it later or you can complete the form online itself.
  8. Whichever mode you choose, please make sure that you fill the exact details as mentioned in your other documents.
  9. Verify your details and click on the submit button.
  10. You will now be taken to a new page where you will be able to see your saved or submitted applications. Click on the link View.
  11. Select your application and click on the link “Pay and Schedule Appointment”.
  12. Select the option of Online payment and click on “Next”. If you want you can generate an offline challan and pay in cash at the nearest SBI branch. The bank will take two days to update the payment status. (Challan is valid for 85 days from the date of generation)
  13. You will now be able to see a list of all the Passport Seva Kendra near your city along with the earliest available time slot for an appointment.
  14. Select the Passport Seva Kendra along with the appointment time slot.
  15. Now, when you click on the button “Pay and Book Appointment”, you will be redirected to the payment gateway, where you can complete the payment process.
  16. After completing the process, you will be redirected to the page with the details of your appointment.
  17. Take a printout of the application form and make sure that you carry it along with other original documents when you visit the Passport Seva Kendra on the scheduled date and time.
  18. After the officer verifies and accepts your application form and documents, you can track the status of your application with the help of the ARN (Application Reference Number)

You have to make sure that you visit the Passport Seva Kendra on the scheduled date and time. Otherwise, you will have to repeat the entire process through the Passport Seva Online Portal.
