A passport is a mandatory government document that provides identification and proof of a citizen's nationality. It is the only globally accepted form of identification and thus the most important document to have when traveling abroad.

Blue Passport

The Blue Passport (Type P), recognized by its navy blue cover, is the most common passport issued to Indian citizens for travel, including leisure, business, education and employment.

Orange Passport

In 2018, the government of India launched the orange passport to simplify the emigration process for those in need of Emigration Check Required (ECR) clearance. This was  for the safety of less-educated workers going abroad to work by facilitating their identification during immigration inspections.

  • Faster ECR Verification: The introduction of the orange passport has streamlined the emigration process.
  • Simplified Identification: Helps authorities easily recognize individuals who have not completed education beyond the 10th grade.
  • Specific Immigration Criteria: Orange passport holders must follow unique verification procedures aligned with ECR safety regulations.
  • Updated Passport Format: The last page has been removed, excluding details like the father’s name and permanent address for smoother immigration processing.

White Passport

The White Passport is issued exclusively to Indian government officials traveling abroad for official duties. It signifies authority, allows quick identification, and ensures formal treatment during international travel.

  • Symbol of Authority: Reserved for government personnel, signifying their official status.
  • Seamless Travel: Ensures smooth immigration and priority processing.

Diplomatic Passport

A Diplomatic Passport is issued exclusively to government officials and diplomats traveling for official duties. Recognizable by its maroon cover, it signifies their diplomatic status and grants special privileges abroad.

  • Exclusive Issuance: Reserved for diplomats and senior government officials, distinguishing them from regular travellers.
  • Visa Exemption: Holders are generally exempt from visa requirements, simplifying international travel.

  • Fast-Track Immigration: Ensures quicker processing, reduced waiting times, and hassle-free entry and exit from foreign countries.

What is the Eligibility for Applying Different Types of Passports?

Among the different types of passports in India, each category has specific eligibility criteria. Here’s a breakdown:

Blue Passport

Being the most common and ordinary passport, any Indian citizen can apply for it. An Indian citizen however should fall into one of the following categories:

  • Should be a citizen of India by descent
  • Should be an Indian citizen by birth
  • Should be a citizen of India by naturalization

Orange Passport 

Any Indian citizen who has not completed 10th grade or fails to provide all necessary documentation for SSC can apply for an orange passport. Eligible individuals here include:

  • Individuals worked overseas for 3 years or more, either at a single time or over the 3 years
  • Adults aged 50 years and above
  • Minors aged 18 years and below
  • Individuals paying income taxes from businesses or regular professions

White Passport

  • Indian government officials are those who represent the Indian government. The application process followed for an white official passport however differs from an ordinary blue passport
  • IAS officials
  • Indian Government officials
  • Indian Police Service Department officials

Diplomatic Passport

Here are the eligibility criteria mandatory to meet for issuing a diplomatic passport:

  • Officials holding a diplomatic status
  • Officers from Indian Foreign Services (Branch A)
  • Officers from the Ministry of External Affairs and some from the Indian Foreign Service (Branch B)
  • Officials employed by the Government of India
  • Dependents of officials willing to get employed and study outside their country of residence 

What are the Documents Needed for Applying a Passport?

Applying for a new passport in India is an easy process. It is however, essential to carry all required documents, both original and photocopies, when attending your passport appointment.

Here is the list of documents you must carry: 

  • Proof of identity: Documents that include voter ID, Aadhaar card, and PAN card
  • Date of birth proof: It is mandatory to carry a school leaving certificate, a birth certificate, or any government-approved document if there is any.
  • Proof of address: Documents such as rent agreement, utility bills, and a valid driver's license
  • Passport-size photographs: A recent passport-sized photograph adhering to guidelines

Once you submit these documents along with a duly filled application form, your passport will be issued. After that, you just need to opt for travel insurance online and be ready to travel to the destination of your choice.
