The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) acts as a saving tool. The employee and the employer contribute an equal amount towards savings that can be availed upon retirement or after switching jobs. The interest rate applicable to the EPF contributions is 8.1% for the period October 1st 2021 to December 31st 2022.
The interest rate applicable to the EPF contributions is 8.10% for FY 2022-23.
To check EPF balance, make sure that the employer has activated your Universal Account Number (UAN). UAN is a unique identification number provided for all employees enrolled under the EPF scheme. All employees should have only one UAN during their working life irrespective of the companies they change. UAN is important as the entire process related to the EPF services are now operated online. Thanks to UAN, accessing your PF account services, such as withdrawal, checking EPF balance, and EPF loan application is easy.
Once your UAN number is activated, follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to the EPFO portal. Go to the tab ‘Our Services’ and choose the option that says “For Employees” from the drop-down menu.
Step 2: Now, click on the option ‘Member passbook’ under “Services.”
Step 3: A login page will appear. Enter your UAN number and password here after it has been activated.
Step 4: Select the ‘Member ID’ and click on the ‘View Password [Old: Full]’ option.
Step 5: Your PF details will be displayed on the screen.
Step 6: You can print this passbook by clicking on the ‘Download Passbook’ option.
Once the UAN is integrated with your KYC details, follow these steps:
You’ll have to set your preferred language of communication in the SMS. Just use the first three characters of your preferred language to do so. If you wish to receive updates in English, use the first three characters of the word English, i.e. EPFOHO UAN ENG.
If you want to receive the message updates in Marathi, then type in EPFOHO UAN MAR. This facility is available in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali.
You can inquire about your EPF balance by giving a missed call to the authorised phone from your registered mobile number. This service is only available upon the integration of your UAN with your KYC details. If you are unable to do this, you can take the help of your employer.
Once the UAN is integrated with your KYC details, follow the steps mentioned below:
Employees can check their EPF balance on their phones by downloading the Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app. Aside from checking EPF balances, the app allows you to file and track claims. Members must complete a one-time registration using their UAN-registered cellphone number to access the app.
Let’s have a look at how you can use the UMANG app to view your EPF transactions:
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has not mandated fore-nomination for PF accounts. However, it is recommended to do an e-nomination for the PF account as it helps your nominees to take the EPF account after your death and secure your loved ones.
The e-nomination process is now complete.
PF transfer is the only process to link your old PF account to your current UAN number. Here is the step by step process:
Once you verify the OTP, your PF transfer claim will be submitted, and within 20 days, your PF amount will be transferred to your new PF account; at the same time, your old PF account details will be saved in your current UAN.
You can also check your PF balance by sending an SMS to the mobile number 7738299899. Do note that you should register your mobile number and complete the KYC on the EPFO portal. While sending an SMS, you can choose the language for communication. For example, if you choose English, you can send a text SMS as EPFOHO UAN ENG to know your account balance.
You can also check your PF balance by giving a missed call to 011-22901406 from their registered mobile number. However, the PAN, Aadhaar and bank account must be linked with this number to avail this facility.
The WhatsApp helpline has different numbers for different regional branches. You can find out the details of the respective branch office from www.epfindia.gov.in online.
