1. How to Check PF Balance With UAN Number?

PF Balance Check Using EPFO Portal

To check EPF balance, make sure that you have activated your Universal Account Number (UAN). UAN is a unique identification number provided for all employees enrolled under the EPF scheme. All employees will have only one UAN during their working life irrespective of the companies they change. UAN is important as it is required to access all EPF related services online. Thanks to UAN, accessing your PF account services, such as withdrawal, checking EPF balance, and EPF loan application is easy.

Once your UAN number is activated, follow these steps:

Step 1: Visit the EPF portal and click on ‘e-Passbook’ option available on the homepage.

Let’s have a look at how you can use the UMANG app to view your EPF transactions:

Step 2: The message must be sent in the format - ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG'.

You’ll have to set your preferred language of communication in the SMS. Just use the first three characters of your preferred language to do so. If you wish to receive updates in English, use the first three characters of the word English, i.e. EPFOHO UAN ENG. If you want to receive the message updates in Marathi, then type in EPFOHO UAN MAR

PF Balance Check Through a Missed Call

You can inquire about your EPF balance by giving a missed call to the authorised phone from your registered mobile number. This service is only available upon the integration of your UAN with your KYC details. If you are unable to do this, you can take the help of your employer.

Once the UAN  is integrated with your KYC details, follow the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number.

Step 2: After placing a missed call, you will receive an SMS with your PF details.

You must ensure that the following requirements are fulfilled before you check your EPF balance check through missed call:

  • UAN should be activated.
  • Your mobile number should be registered with the UAN since the missed call facility is available only when the missed call is made from your registered number.
  • The UAN should be linked with other essential documents like PAN, Aadhaar and bank account.

You do not have to pay any charge to avail of the EPF balance check through mobile number service.

Things to remember

  • You can check your EPF balance on the EPFO portal only if your UAN is activated and registered on the EPFO Portal.
  • The facility to view the passbook will be available after six hours of registering on the EPFO Portal.
  • The passbook will show the latest entries reconciled by the EPFO Field Offices.
  • Exempted establishment members and private trusts cannot view their EPFO balance check.

Is e-Nomination Process for PF Account Mandatory?

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has not mandated fore-nomination for PF accounts. However, it is recommended to do an e-nomination for the PF account as it helps your nominees to take the EPF account after your death and secure your loved ones.

How to Submit an e-Nomination in EPFO?

  • Visit the UAN Member e-Sewa portal.
  • Enter the UAN number, password, captcha code and ‘Sign In’ button.
  • Now, select the ‘E-nomination’ option under the ‘Manage’ tab.
  • Click on ‘Enter new nomination’ option.
  • The ‘Provide Details’ tab will appear on the screen, click on the ‘Proceed’ button.
  • Click on ‘Yes’ to update the family declaration.
  • Now add the family member’s details in the e-nomination form by clicking on ‘Add Family Details’. More than one nominee can also be added.
  • Click on ‘Nomination Details’ to declare the total amount of share.
  • Next, click on ‘Save EPF Nomination’.
  • Lastly, click on ‘E-sign’ to generate OTP and submit the OTP received on the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

The e-nomination process is now complete.

How to Check EPF Balance for Exempted Establishments ?

Employees of exempted establishments or private trusts cannot view the EPF balance on the EPFO portal. In the case of an exempted establishment or private trust, the EPF contribution is transferred to the trusts managed by the company and not the EPF. Thus, only the trust managed by the company can give information about the PF balance of an employee. Employees can get the balance information by checking the salary slips, company's employee portal or raising a request to the HR department.

How to Check PF Balance without Registered Mobile Number?

You don't need your registered mobile number every time to check your PF balance. You only require UAN and password to login and check the PF status. Check out the simple process below:
