The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) acts as a saving tool. The employee and the employer contribute an equal amount towards savings that can be availed upon retirement or after switching jobs.
You can now check your EPF balance via SMS, by giving a missed call, the EPFO app/Umang app, and the EPFO Portal. Checking the EPF balance becomes essential when you plan to withdraw the PF amount for any expenses, take a loan against the EPF balance or check the interest accumulated in your EPF account.

There are multiple ways to check your PF balance, both with and without UAN. They are listed as follows:
To check EPF balance, make sure that you have activated your Universal Account Number (UAN). UAN is a unique identification number provided for all employees enrolled under the EPF scheme. Once your UAN number is activated, follow these steps:
Step 1: Visit the EPF portal and click on ‘For Employees' section under ‘Services’ at the top of the page.
Step 2: Click on ‘Member Passbook’ under the ‘services’ section.
Step 3: This will redirect you to a new page. Enter your UAN and password. Fill in the Captcha and Sign In.
Step 4: A six-digit OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked phone number.
Step 5: Enter the OTP and click ‘Verify’. Your PF account balance will be displayed on the screen.
You must ensure that the following requirements are fulfilled before you check your EPF balance check through EPFO portal:
Employees can check their EPF balance on their phones by downloading the Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app. Aside from checking EPF balances, the app allows you to file and track claims. Members must complete a one-time registration using their UAN-registered cellphone number to access the app.
Let’s have a look at how you can use the UMANG app to view your EPF transactions:
Step 1: Download the UMANG app from Google Play Store or App Store.
Step 2: Log in to the UMANG app by clicking on the profile picture. Select ‘Services’ and click on the ‘Social Security’ option.
Step 3: Click on ‘EPFO’ option from the list of services.
Step 4: Under ‘Employee Centric Service’, click on ‘ View Passbook’.
Step 5: Enter your UAN number. You will receive a OTP on your registered mobile number.
Step 6: Enter the OTP received on your mobile and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
Step 7: Click on the Company for which you want to view and download the EPF passbook.
Step 8: The passbook will be displayed on the screen.
Step 9: Click on the ‘Download’ button to download the EPF passbook.
Once the UAN is integrated with your KYC details, follow these steps:
Step 1: Send an SMS to mobile number - 7738299899.
Step 2: The message must be sent in the format - ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG'.
You’ll have to set your preferred language of communication in the SMS. Just use the first three characters of your preferred language to do so. If you wish to receive updates in English, use the first three characters of the word English, i.e. EPFOHO UAN ENG. If you want to receive the message updates in Marathi, then type in EPFOHO UAN MAR.

You can check PF balance by sending SMS only when your UAN is active and seeded with your bank account, Aadhaar number and PAN. If you have not linked your UAN with your bank account, Aadhaar and PAN, you must complete the eKYC with UAN to check your balance via SMS.
You can inquire about your EPF balance by giving a missed call to the authorised phone from your registered mobile number. This service is only available upon the integration of your UAN with your KYC details. If you are unable to do this, you can take the help of your employer.
Once the UAN is integrated with your KYC details, follow the steps mentioned below:
Step 1: Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number.
Step 2: After placing a missed call, you will receive an SMS with your PF details.

You do not have to pay any charge to avail of the EPF balance check through mobile number service.
You don't need your registered mobile number every time to check your PF balance. You only require UAN and password to login and check the PF status. Check out the simple process below:
Step 1: Visit the EPF portal and click on ‘e-Passbook’ option available on the homepage.
Step 2: Enter your UAN number, password, captcha and click on the ‘Sign In’ button.
Step 3: Click on the ‘Passbook’ option.
Step 4: Select the ‘Member ID’ and your PF details will be displayed on the screen.
Step 5: You can print this passbook by clicking on the ‘Download as PDF’ option.
Employees of exempted establishments or private trusts cannot view the EPF balance on the EPFO portal. In the case of an exempted establishment or private trust, the EPF contribution is transferred to the trusts managed by the company and not the EPF. Thus, only the trust managed by the company can give information about the PF balance of an employee. Employees can get the balance information by checking the salary slips, company's employee portal or raising a request to the HR department.
