Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) is the aggregated category-wise information of various transactions undertaken by the taxpayer against his PAN number or Form 60/61 (without PAN) during a financial year. In the Taxpayer Information Summary, all the transactions reflected in the Annual Information Statement (AIS) are summarised under the separate information categories. The information reflected in the Taxpayer Information Summary is used to prefill the Income Tax Return.
Let’s look in more detail at what precisely the Tax Information Summary (TIS) is and its significance in Income Tax Return Filing.
The Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) summarises category-wise information about the taxpayer. It is prepared by deduplicating information as per the pre-defined rules. This means the system eliminates duplicate information from multiple sources and consolidates similar information under different categories (Eg, salary, dividend, interest). It shows the value processed by the system, which is generated after the deduplication based on pre-defined rules and the value accepted by the taxpayer, which is the derived value after considering the taxpayer's feedback and the value processed by the system. The system uses the derived information to prefill the income tax return.
The key details described under the Taxpayer Information Summary are mentioned below:
The information category under the Taxpayer Information Summary contains a broad information category that aggregates similar-nature information and presents it in a very simplified way to enable tax return pre-filling.
The Income Tax department’s system generates the processed value after deduplicating information from multiple sources. The processed value is only shown in the Taxpayer Information Summary.
The value accepted by the taxpayer is the derived value after considering the value processed by the system and the value provided by the taxpayer’s feedback. The derived value is shown in both the Annual Information Statement and Taxpayer Information Summary. This derived value is used in prefilling the Income Tax Return.
To each information category shown in the Taxpayer Information Summary is linked a list of all the information from various sources under the same information category, displaying the following information:

The information contained in Form 26AS is transferred to the AIS. The taxpayer can provide feedback on the information provided in the AIS. The information from the AIS is transferred to the TIS, and the modified information (through the taxpayer’s feedback) is reflected in the TIS as a derived value. The derived value is the value generated by the Income Tax Department's system after considering the processed value (information generated by the system after deduplication of information as per the pre-defined rules) and feedback provided by the taxpayer. The derived value is pre-filled in the taxpayer's income tax return.
The information is transferred in the following manner:
Form 26AS >>> AIS >>> TIS >>> Pre-filled Information on the Income Tax Return. However, the taxpayer can change the auto-populated information on the tax return.
If the value of Form 26AS and AIS differs, the value from 26AS should be taken. The taxpayer can verify the information in Form 26AS through salary slips, bank statements, and invoices for sale and purchase transactions.
