How to Generate CRN without Logging into the E-filing Portal

Thе Incomе Tax Dеpartmеnt's е filing portal gives the option to generate CRN without logging into the portal into their accounts. This function is handy for thosе who may havе yеt to register themselves on the portal or whеrе instant tax paymеnts arе nееdеd.

To crеatе a CRN without logging into the portal, the taxpayеrs nееd to takе thеsе stеps:

  • Visit thе е-filing portal.
  • Click on the "e-Pay Tax" option.
  • Entеr thе nеcеssary information such as pеrmanеnt account numbеr (PAN) and mobile number for OTP verification.
  • An OTP will be sent to your mobile number. Enter the OTP and click on ‘Continue.’
  • Click ‘Proceed’ on a tax payment tile that applies to you.
  • Once you have chosen the tax payment tile, provide information like assessment year, kind of payment (minor head), etc.
  • In the ‘Add Tax Breakup Details’ page, carefully review the breakdown of your tax payment in the designated section before proceeding.
  • Choose your preferred payment mode from the available options.
  • After a successful payment, a success message will be displayed. You can download the Challan Receipt for future reference. You can view the details of the payment made in the Payment History menu on the e-Pay Tax page.

Modes Available for Making Payment After Generation of Challan

Oncе thе usеr has crеatеd a CRN, thеy can pay taxеs through various mеthods:

  • Payment through Net Banking: Taxpayеrs can use this option only with authorised banks. If your bank is not an authorised bank, RTGS/NEFT or Payment Gateway mode can be selected for tax payment.
  • Paymеnt through Debit card (of Authorised Banks): Taxpayеrs may pay using the Debit card of authorised banks.
  • Payment through Pay at Bank Counter: Taxpayers can also pay at the bank counter provided that the amount is below Rs.10,000. This mode cannot be used by a Company or a person to whom the provisions of Section 44AB of the Income-tax Act,1961, are applicable.
  • Payment through RTGS/NEFT: Taxpayers can use this mode of payment to pay from any bank account. However, NEFT/RTGS may be applicable as per RBI’s guidelines and the Bank’s policy.
  • Payment through Payment Gateway including UPI and Credit Card: This payment mode offers various options to taxpayers, such as Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card, and UPI. The chosen payment gateway will redirect to its page upon selection, presenting available options. Transaction charges, if applicable, are additional to the tax amount. Taxpayers are advised to compare charges before finalising the payment gateway and method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same CRN for multiple tax payments?

No, you cannot use the same CRN for multiple tax payments. Each CRN is unique and can be used only once for a specific tax payment. You must create a new CRN for every tax payment you wish to make.

Can I create a CRN for tax payments linked to past assessment years?

You can create a CRN for tax payments linked to past assessment years. When creating the CRN, you must indicate the correct assessment year for which you are paying. The CRN method allows you to make payments for the current and earlier assessment years if the payment is linked to a legal tax debt.

Can taxpayer make modifications in the already generated Challan (CRN)?

No. Once a Challan (CRN) is generated, it cannot be modified. However, a new challan can be generated by copying the information from an earlier Challan (CRN). 

CRN is valid till how many days?

After generation of CRN, it moves to “Generated Challan” tab and is valid for 15 days after the date of generation of CRN. Taxpayer may initiate payment against the CRN within this validity period.  If no payment is initiated in the said period, CRN will expire, and taxpayer will have to generate a fresh CRN for making the payment.   

Is it necessary to create a Challan (CRN) for tax payment?

In e-Pay Tax service at e-Filing portal, it is mandatory to generate the Challan for the payment of direct taxes. Every such generated Challan will have a unique Challan Reference Number (CRN) associated with it.
