E-filing of ITR is a one-time task in a whole financial year. So, it is natural to forget your login credentials for the same. Taxpayers find it difficult to retrieve the income tax login password and user ID. However, it is not as difficult as it might seem. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to reset your e-filing password with ease.
How to Reset Income Tax Login Password
Step 1: Access the Income tax department portal.
Step 2: Once you go to the home page from the above link, you will find a ‘Login Here’ button on the top right corner.
Step 3: Enter your User ID and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
For user ID, Individual taxpayers can enter PAN or Aadhaar (only if PAN and Aadhaar are linked). For any other taxpayers, the user ID is PAN.
Step 4: Once you enter your user ID and proceed, button and enter the login page, click on the “Forgot Password” button. It will lead you to the page below.
Step 5: Fill in the User ID and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
Step 6: Once you provide your User ID, you will be directed to the “Reset Password” dashboard where you can select any one option from the list and provide mandatory details. The options are:
a) OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar
b) Upload Digital Signature Certificate
c) Use e-filing OTP
Select any one suitable option and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
Option 1: Reset Using OTP on Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number
- In the next screen, select ‘Generate OTP’ and click on the ‘Continue’ button. If you already have an OTP, select ‘I already have an OTP on Mobile number registered with Aadhaar’ and enter OTP.
- In the ‘Verify Your Identity’ step, select the declaration checkbox and click on the ‘Generate Aadhaar OTP’.
- In the next step, enter the six-digit OTP received on your mobile number registered with Aadhaar and click on the ‘Verify’ button.
- In the next step, enter a new password in the ‘Set New Password’ and ‘Confirm Password’ textboxes. Click on the ‘Submit’ button.
- Password will be reset successfully.
Option 2: Reset Using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
- Select the option ‘Upload Digital Signature Certificate’ and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
- In the next screen, select the option ‘New DSC’ or ‘Registered DSC’, whichever is relevant. Click on the ‘Continue’ button.
Note:
- If you already have a DSC registered on the e-Filing portal, select Registered DSC
- If you do not have a DSC registered on the e-Filing portal, select New DSC
- In the next step, download the emSigner utility. Complete the installation and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
- Select the provider, certificate and the provider password and click on the ‘Sign’ button.
- In the next step, enter a new password in the ‘Set New Password’ and ‘Confirm Password’ textboxes. Click on the ‘Submit’ button.
- The password will be reset successfully.
Option 3: Reset Using E-filing OTP
- Select the option ‘Use e-filing OTP’ and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
- In the next screen, enter the date of birth in the given format. Click on the ‘Continue’ button.
- You will receive an OTP on your mobile number and email ID registered on the e-filing portal. Enter both OTPs and click on the ‘Verify’ button.
- In the next step, enter a new password in the ‘Set New Password’ and ‘Confirm Password’ textboxes. Click on the ‘Submit’ button.
- The password will be reset successfully.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you no longer have access to your registered email or mobile number, you can still reset your password by:
- Using a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
- Answering the secret question set during your account registration.
- Contacting the eFiling helpdesk to update your registered mobile number/email ID.
When setting a new password on the Indian eFiling portal, ensure that it meets the following criteria:
- Password should be 8 to 14 characters long.
- It should contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one special character.
- Avoid using commonly used passwords or easily guessable information.
If you have forgotten your password and do not have access to any recovery options (email, mobile, DSC, secret question), you must update your profile information by contacting the eFiling helpdesk and following their verification procedures. Once updated, you can proceed with the password reset.
