An invalid XML error in ITR arises whenever the taxpayer attempts to generate the XML file using the ITR utility’s older version. It is one of the most common errors people encounter while filing income tax returns. The XML file is generated from the ITR form. The error occurs when you try to upload this file after editing it. 

Reason for Invalid XML Error in ITR 

You may have encountered an ‘invalid XML’ message while trying to file your income tax return. The invalid XML errors in ITR may occur due to various reasons. Understanding what causes ITR XML file error is the first step to resolving invalid XML errors while filing ITR. Here are the possible reasons that may cause this error:

  • If you have used an older format of the ITR utility to generate the XML file.
  • If you have changed or edited the XML file generated from the ITR form prior to uploading it to the portal,
  • While using the Excel utility to file income tax returns, the computer being used for generating the XML doesn’t have the .Net 3.5 framework enabled or installed. 

How to Solve Invalid XML Error in ITR using Excel utility

If you are getting an error while uploading an ITR XML file using the Excel utilitythe following steps can help in resolving the issue: 

Step 1: Remove the older version of XML that is causing the error. Also, make sure you don’t remove the older version of the ITR Excel form.

Step 2: Download and open the recent version of the ITR Excel utility that you already used to generate the XML (from the e-filing portal).

Step 3: Open the latest iteration of the ITR Excel form. Now click the “Import from Previous Version” button on the right panel.

Step 4: Navigate and choose the saved Excel file, which is actually an earlier version of your filed ITR form, and click on “Open.”

Step 5: This step imports the data filled out and saved from the earlier version of the ITR Excel form into the corresponding recent version.

Step 6: Carefully review the details in the new ITR Excel form to ensure that all the information from the earlier version is correctly imported. If necessary, you may need to provide additional details. Finally, generate the XML after filling in all the essential details and upload the new XML file into the e-filing portal.

How to Solve Invalid XML Error in ITR using Java Utility

When filing an income tax return through the JAVA facility, follow the below steps to understand how to solve an invalid XML error in ITR.

Step 1: Download the latest version of the ITR Java utility software and open it. Make sure this ITR Java utility is the one you used to generate the XML on the e-filing portal.

Step 2: Launch the latest ITR Java utility and click “Open” from the Menu bar.

Step 3: Choose the XML file that was created from the earlier version of the Java utility.

Step 4: This step imports all the information from the previous version of the ITR Java utility to the recent version.

Step 5: Check the data in the recent ITR version to confirm that the correct data is imported from the earlier version. Fill in all the necessary fields and then generate the XML. Upload the utility on the e-filing portal.

Addressing  “Invalid XML” error When .Net 3.5 Frameworks are Not Enabled or Installed

If you are using a computer that doesn’t have the .Net 3.5 framework installed or enabled to generate the XML file, you may encounter an invalid XML error in ITR filing. Here is how you can solve it:

Install the.Net 3.5 framework using this link, and then enable it.

If the .Net 3.5 framework is not enabled, follow the below steps:

Step 1: Open “Control Panel” and go to “Programs”. Now open “Features” and click on “Turn Windows features on or off”.

Step 2: Choose “.NET Framework 3.5” (which includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and click on “OK.”

Step 3: Restart your system and generate the XML file.

Step 4: Finally, upload the generated XML file on the e-filing portal.

Things to Consider When Filing ITR using offline utilities

Here are important considerations to avoid getting errors while uploading ITR XML files.

  • Ascertain that you choose the right assessment year for filing the ITR.
  • Ensure the downloaded ITR has been extracted from the zip file to enter the required details. Use it for filing ITR.
  • Keep in mind that you must always download the latest version of the ITR form from the e-filing portal.

MS Office Excel version 2007/2010/2013 (with macros enabled) on Microsoft Windows 7/8/10 with .Net Framework (3.5 and higher version)
