The Central Board of Direct Taxes has released guidelines for validation rules and possible errors that may be encountered while filing ITR-1 for the Financial Year 2024-2025 (AY 2025-26). These rules will help taxpayers file ITR-1 without errors and ensure accuracy, consistency, and streamlining of e-filing through both government and private platforms.
CBDT enforces validation rules to ensure data quality and accuracy of income tax returns filed through various platforms.
Since many taxpayers use government sites and third-party or commercial tools to file their ITR, these validation rules are crucial and help identify and assess the returns for errors or defects at the initial stage. These rules allow taxpayers to correct such discrepancies before submission to ensure an accurate, compliant, and error—or defect-free Income Tax Return.
ITR-1 filing shall go under three categories of error or defect before verification.
Category | Particulars |
A | Return will not be uploaded, and error messages will be displayed immediately. |
B | Returns will be allowed to be uploaded, but taxpayers shall be informed of possible defects or errors in returns u/s 139(9), and CPC will issue appropriate notices and communication. |
D | The return will be allowed to be uploaded. Still, the taxpayer shall be informed that some deductions or claims may not be allowed or entertained unless the respective claim forms or particulars accompany the return. |
ITR-1 is not allowed to be uploaded by taxpayers who filed through any platforms if it has the following errors:
