One of the most daunting experiences after filing your income tax return is receiving a notice from the Income Tax Department (ITD). This year, ClearTax is here to take care of your notices if you receive any. Filing with ClearTax not only relieves your tax filing stress but also helps you manage ITD notices. ClearTax will be with you throughout your tax filing journey, from filling your returns to helping you deal with ITD notices, if any.

Types of Income Tax Notices

Even though you have entered all details on your ITR accurately, the Income Tax Department may send you a notice. There are various types of notices that the ITD may issue for various reasons, such as errors in filing returns, short or non-payment of tax, etc. However, the most common notices you may receive are those under Section 139(9) and Section 143(1) under the Income Tax Act.

Section 139(9)

Notice under Section 139(9) relates to a ‘Defective Return’. A notice may be issued under this Section when the ITD finds incomplete information or inconsistencies in your return. When you receive this notice, you have to rectify the defect in your return within 15 days of receipt of the return.

Your return may be considered invalid, or you may have to pay a penalty for non-compliance with this notice. ClearTax experts will help you rectify your returns within one week of purchasing our plan.

Section 143(1)

Once your return is processed by the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC), the Income Tax Department will send you an intimation under Section 143(1) after preliminary assessment of your return. This intimation includes incorrect claims, arithmetical errors, tax calculation verification or discrepancies like unreported income evident in form 26AS. It will also indicate any tax due or refund. If there are any tax dues, ClearTax experts will help you to respond to this intimation.
