The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department has made geolocation necessary for taxpayers when registering for a new GST account or adding a new location to the GST account.
Geolocating in GST allows customers to update their business's precise Google address with greater accuracy and ease when creating a new account or making changes to their address in an existing account.
Keep reading as we provide a step-by-step guide on how to accept and update your business’s geocoded address on the GST portal.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to geolocate or geocode your address on the GST portal:
Step 1: Log in to the GST Portal using your user ID and password. Once you’ve successfully logged in, a message will be displayed for all eligible taxpayers:
Step 2: Click on ‘Continue’ or go to Services > Registration > Geocoding principal place of business.
Step 3: A page will be displayed with all the details of your existing principal place of business as per your registration information.
If the details of the geocoded address are accurate, continue following these steps:
Step 1: Click on the ‘Accept geocoded address’ button.
Step 2: The accepted address will be displayed below the map, and all relevant fields will be auto-populated and locked.
Step 3: Check the Verification box, select the authorised signatory's name from the drop-down list, and enter the location from where you’re applying.
Step 4: Click ‘Submit with DSC’ or ‘Submit with EVC’; whichever is applicable.
Step 5: For DSC, select the certificate, sign, and proceed. On the other hand, for EVC, enter the OTP sent to your registered email and mobile number.
Step 6: On successful verification, a message will pop up, and an email and SMS will be sent to the registered details.
If the geocoded address doesn’t appear on the screen, or there are any changes you want to make, click on the ‘Update geocoded address’ and follow the following steps:
Step 1: Once you click on ‘Update geocoded address’, the details of the existing principal place of business as per the Registration details are displayed along with the Map above them.
Step 2: You can move the pin on the map to the correct location and click ‘Confirm’ to finalise it. The fields will fill automatically based on this selection.
Alternatively, you can type the address in the "Locate your address" field and choose from the given options. The map and location will be updated automatically.
Step 3: The fields will be filled automatically based on the map selection—you just need to fill in any remaining fields. Also, you can click ‘Reset address’ if you want to completely change the address.
Step 4: Remember, if you try to move the map pointer outside India, the following error message will be displayed.
Step 5: Check the verification box, choose the authorised signatory's name from the drop-down menu, and enter the filing location.
Step 6: As per your eligibility, select ‘Submit with DSC’ or ‘Submit with EVC.’ If you want to complete this later, you can also select the ‘Remind me later’ option.
Step 7: For DSC, select the certificate and sign, and for EVC, enter the OTP sent to the registered email and phone number.
Step 9: A message will be shown on the screen confirming the update, and an email and SMS will be sent to the registered details.
Please note that updating the geocoded address will not impact the principal place of business address in the Registration Certificate. For that, you need to file a core amendment application.
