How to Change Password in the New Income Tax Portal

Taxpayers can e-file their income tax returns and make other income tax related compliances by logging in to the income tax e-filing portal. You can log into the e-filing portal using your PAN/Aadhaar and the password created during registration.

What are the Basic Requirements for Changing Password

  • Taxpayer must be registered on the income tax e-filing portal
  • He must have access to the user ID (i.e. PAN) and password

How to Change Password

If you want to change your existing password, you can log in to the income tax e-filing portal and follow these steps:

Step 1: Log in to the income tax portal “www.incometax.gov.in” by entering your user ID, existing password and confirm your secure access message.

Step 2: Click on ‘Change Password’ under ‘My Profile’ on the top-right corner of the screen.

Step 3: Enter your current password and the new password of your choice. Then, confirm your new password. The new password must have characters between 8 and 14, uppercase and lowercase letters, at least one number and one special character.

Note: Do not click Refresh or Back.

Step 4: Click on ‘Submit’

Step 5: Once you have submitted successfully, you will receive a confirmation email and SMS in your registered email ID and mobile number.

Can I change my password to one of my previous passwords?

Yes, you can. However, your new password cannot be the same as your prior three passwords.

How do I know if my password is updated?

A success message and a transaction ID will appear. A confirmation message will also be sent to the registered mobile number and email ID.

What do I do if the password change has failed?

Follow these steps if your password change has failed-

1. Delete temp files from your web browser
2. Login again and try changing your password once more.

I have forgotten my user ID and password. How can I recover them?

Your PAN (or Aadhaar number, in case your PAN and Aadhaar number are linked) is your user ID. You can click on the Forgot Password in the e-Filing portal to recover password using:

  • Aadhaar OTP or
  • OTP received on your mobile number registered on the e-Filing portal; or
  • EVC (Electronic Verification Code) generated through pre-validated Bank Account / Demat Account; or
  • DSC (Digital Signature Certificate).
