FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is responsible for regulating food safety and standards in India. It is in charge of regulating food articles, food companies and manufacturers to ensure safe food handling practices and good quality food that is safe for consumption. FSSAI was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
All Food Business Operators (FBOs) in India must apply for FSSAI Registration. FSSAI provides a Registration/License for food products of the FBOs with a logo and 14-digit food license number that they must print on their food products or display on the manufacturing or restaurant premises. The FSSAI Registration/License certifies that the food products are fit for consumption.

The FSSAI Registration/License application status will be according to the different stages of the application. The status of the FSSAI application can be categorised as follows:
When the applicant submits the FSSAI application but the process for issuing the FSSAI Registration/License has not yet started by the respective authorities, the FSSAI application status displays as ‘Process yet to be started’.
When the FSSAI application status displays as ‘Application reverted’, it means that the respective authority has processed the application and has reverted it to the applicant for necessary modification or clarification.
The applicant needs to submit the response within 30 days from the reverted date to avoid the risk of application rejection. Thus, the applicants have to track their application status from time to time to see if it is reverted and respond to the clarification or modification on time.
An email will also be sent to the applicant for modification or clarification required in the application. They need to log in using their application reference number or email ID to do the necessary modification or issue a clarification.
When the status is ‘Application rejected’, the respective authorities have rejected the FSSAI Registration/License application. The FSSAI Registration/License application will get rejected when the applicants do not submit certain information within 30 days of the application being reverted.
When the application status is ‘Inspection’, the respective authorities have processed the application, and the food premises or company is due for an inspection shortly. The respective authority will assign an officer to inspect the food business premises of the applicant and check whether it complies with the FSSAI hygiene and safety regulations.
When the application status is ‘Registration certificate issued’, it means that the FSSAI has issued the FSSAI Registration/License certificate. The applicants can download the certificate by logging into the FoSCoS website.
The FSSAI Registration/License certificate is issued after the respective authorities find that all the information provided by the applicant conforms to the prescribed FSSAI guidelines and criteria.
The validity of an FSSAI registration depends on the applicability of the registration. Thus, it varies in each case. The FSSAI license is issued for a period of one to five years. The FBOs should renew the license before 180 days of its expiry. A late fee of Rs.100 per day is charged if an FBO applies for renewal after the expiry of the FSSAI license.
