Revenue Minister Hasmukh Adhia says that the government is very serious about implementing GST come July 1. Many businesses are still clamoring for a September rollout, as they as believe it will be hard for them to be ready with the new technologies and tax processes by July. On this. Mr. Adhia commented that delaying implementation is a decision that only the GST Council can take and it will probably happen if the Council feels that the country is still not ready for it.
The first phase of implementation was getting the bills passed in Parliament, which would allow businesses a clear picture of the new tax structure. Now, the challenge is to reach out to businesses and ensure a smooth transition to the new regime and the government is hopeful of doing so before the proposed date.
