Taxpayers will not be allowed to cancel an e-invoice once 24 hours have elapsed since the issuance of the said e-invoice. The e-invoice portal does not allow for amendment of e-invoices either. A taxpayer will either have to issue a debit note or modify/cancel such e-invoice on the GST portal.

CBIC notified the 6th phase of e-invoicing. Hence, taxpayers with ₹5 Cr+ turnover in any financial year from 2017-18 shall issue e-invoices w.e.f 1st August 2023.

The GST department has deferred the time limit of 7 days to report the old e-invoices on the e-invoice IRP portals by three months. Further, the department is yet to announce the new implementation date.

The GSTN released an advisory on 12th and 13th April 2023 stating that taxpayers with an annual turnover of Rs.100 crore and more must report tax invoices and credit-debit notes to the IRP within 7 days from the date of issue of the invoice/CDN from 1st May 2023.

The e-Invoicing system for B2B transactions has now been extended to those with an annual aggregate turnover of more than Rs.10 crore up to Rs.20 crore starting from 1st October 2022, vide notification no. 17/2022.
Here is a step-by-step guide on editing e-invoice data in the GSTR-1 return.
Step 1: Log in to the GST Portal with valid login credentials.
Step 2: Go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard.
Step 3: On the ‘File Returns’ page, select the financial year and the relevant return filing period from the drop-down menu, and click on ‘Search’.
Step 1: To download e-invoice data, click on the ‘Download Details from e-invoices (excel)’ button. The following message will appear on the screen.
Step 2: Click on the ‘E-invoice download history’ button to access the downloaded excel files.
Step 3: The e-invoice details section will display the list of the last five invoices downloaded by the taxpayer. Click on the ‘Click here to download – File1’ link to download the excel file. The downloaded file will get saved in the local drive of your device. The link to access the same will be available at the bottom of the page.
Step 4: Click on the file icon to open the folder on your device, and double click on the excel file to open it. The various e-invoice details that have been auto-populated in the Form GSTR-1 will be displayed in the excel file. The details of the various tables will be displayed in different sheets. They can be accessed by clicking on the tabs available at the bottom of the sheet.
The e-invoice data gets auto-populated from the e-invoice system in the following tables of the Form GSTR-1:

Likewise, you can click on any of the above-mentioned tiles to edit the details. To edit the auto-populated e-invoice details, follow the steps mentioned below:
Step 1: Click on the ‘4A, 4B, 4C, 6B, 6C – B2B Invoices’ tile to edit the data. The following screen will be displayed.
Step 2: Click on a GSTIN under ‘Receiver’s Details’ to open the list of invoices related to that particular recipient’s GSTIN. All the invoices received from the selected GSTIN will be displayed.
Step 3: To view all the columns, click on the ‘Display/Hide Columns’ drop-down arrows, and select the ‘Check All’ option from the list. The following columns will be displayed with the auto-populated data.
If the e-invoice details are auto-populated in the Form GSTR-1, the following details can be viewed on the ‘Processed Documents’ page:
Note: By default, the IRN and IRN Date columns will be hidden. To view these columns, perform step 3, as mentioned above.
Step 4: To edit an invoice’s details, click on the edit icon under the ‘Actions’ column. The invoice data will be displayed.
Step 5: Click on the ‘Edit’ button at the bottom of the page. The Item details sections will become editable.
Step 6: Make changes to the invoice details wherever required. Then click on the ‘Save’ button to save these changes.
Note: The ‘Save’ button will be displayed on the page only after clicking on the ‘Edit’ button.
Step 7: A pop-up will appear on the screen, requiring confirmation from the user. Click on the ‘Yes’ button to proceed, which will close the message window. The following success message will be displayed at the top of the page, indicating that the request has been successfully accepted.
Note: Once the e-invoice details auto-populated in the Form GSTR-1 get edited, the source will no longer appear as ‘e-invoice’, and the three columns, i.e. Source, IRN, and IRN Date become blank.
Step 8: Click on the ‘Generate Summary’ button at the bottom of the page to update the invoice details. The following message will be displayed.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the ‘Generate GSTR-1 summary’ to include the auto-populated details pending for action by the recipients. The following message will appear on the screen once the summary has been generated. You can check back after one minute. After the summary is generated, a success message will appear on top of the page.
The summary will be generated by the GST Portal automatically at intervals of 30 minutes. To view the summary instantly after adding invoices, you can generate the summary by clicking on the ‘Generate GSTR-1 Summary’ button. However, the summary can be generated only at intervals of 10 minutes. If you attempt to generate the summary before 10 minutes have elapsed, you will notice an error message on the top of the page.
Taxpayers cannot cancel e-invoices after 24 hours or amend them on the e-invoice portal. Updates from the CBIC and GST department are shared. Editing e-invoice data in Form GSTR-1 involves several steps such as downloading details, accessing e-invoice data, and updating invoice details.
