How to Resolve "Access Denied" Issues on the GST Portal: Common Causes & Fixes

The GST portal is India's digital backbone for regulating the indirect tax system. Right from registration of a new taxpayer to issuance of refunds, the GST portal helps them all. However, on a few occasions, the GST portal logs out the user, stating an "access denied" issue and asking the user to log in again. This access denied issue may sound minor, but on crucial due dates, it may disrupt compliance. This article will explore what access denied errors are and how to resolve them.

What is Access Denied in GST?

Access denied error indicates that the user does not have the necessary permission to view or authenticate the webpage on the GST Portal. This may occur mainly due to the following reasons:

  1. There are network or technical glitches which may cause the error.
  2. The user's session has timed out due to inactivity.
  3. Login credentials, i.e., user ID & password for GST login, are incorrect.
  4. GST registration status is under verification or has changed to inactive or cancelled.

How to Resolve Access Denied Issues on the GST Portal

A user may use the following methods to resolve access denied issues occurring on the GST portal:

  1. Check the browser's version and compatibility; the GST portal works smoothly on an updated version of the browser and JavaScript installed in the browser.
  2. Clear the browser's cache/cookies and history; thereafter, restart the system or browser.
  3. Avoid logging in multiple times through different browsers simultaneously.
  4. Use 'forget password/username' to reset login credentials.
  5. Check GSTIN status through the 'search taxpayer' feature available on the GST portal, whether it is active, cancelled or suspended.
  6. Connect with GST Helpdesk at helpdesk@gst.gov.in or call 1800-103-4786 in case the issue is not resolved or occurs repeatedly.

Preventive Measures to Avoid Access Denial

  1. Keep the latest version of the browser and JavaScript; update these two regularly. Also, clear browser history, cache/cookies memory periodically.
  2. Due dates often see heavy traffic on the GST portal, which can lead to access denied issues. To avoid this, submit your returns and pay your liabilities 2-3 days in advance.
  3. Check communications from the GST portal on the registered email ID and mobile number to know any action taken by the tax officer.
  4. Reach out to your tax officer immediately to notify them about this error.

Legal Implications of Access Denied in GST

  1. An access denied issue can result in portal inaccessibility, causing delays in filing returns or paying tax liabilities, potentially leading to penalties and interest upon late filing.
  2. This issue can also lead to delays in claiming input tax credit, which the taxpayer must claim by 30th November of the succeeding year, or by the date of filing the annual return (GSTR-9), whichever is earlier.
  3. Such issues may also delay responses on the invoice management tool, leading to miscommunication with your customers or vendors and adversely affecting your business relationships.
