The use of online transactions are increasing daily among every individual and business. But the security issue related to online payment persists as we hear about frauds and scams almost daily.

To strengthen the security of your transactions, mobile banking apps and UPI platforms have started asking for MPIN for verification. It is a unique passcode you must enter to authenticate your identity before proceeding with any transaction.

Go through this article to know more about MPIN and its relevant details.

What is an MPIN Number?

The full form of MPIN is Mobile Personal Identification Number. It is a 4 or 6-digit code you must enter on payment or banking apps before making a transaction. It acts as an authentication process during payments.

With the help of MPIN, you do not have to remember details like bank account number, IFSC code or other personal information for verification during transactions. From a security perspective, MPIN has proved to be a key alternative to confirm the identity of a user during mobile payments.

MPIN Number - Example

An example of MPIN can be 257964 or 754129. You use this code before confirming the payment, thus helping the app verify your identity and account details with this code.

How to Set a New MPIN?

To use mobile banking services seamlessly, you must set an MPIN. However, there are different ways you can generate this passcode.

You can follow these methods to understand how to get MPIN.

  1. Using net banking

Follow the steps to generate MPIN for your mobile banking app:

  1. Open your bank's net banking app and enter the customer ID and password to log in.
  2. Navigate to the option for mobile banking in the Menu section and choose the MPIN option.
  3. Click on “Setup MPIN”.
  4. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter it to verify your number.
  5. Enter the 4 or 6-digit MPIN code of your choice and confirm.
  1. Using UPI app

Different UPI apps can be used to generate a new MPIN or change it. The steps to generate MPIN through UPI are:

  1. Log in to your UPI app using your banking customer ID and password.
  2. Navigate to the Settings or Profile section.
  3. Find the option to set MPIN.
  4. Follow the instructions as displayed to set up and confirm your MPIN.
  1. Using an ATM card

MPIN can also be set at an ATM. The method to follow here is:

  1. Insert your card into the ATM machine.
  2. Enter the card’s PIN and select the “Confirm” option.
  3. From the next menu, choose “Forgot MPIN / login password”.
  4. After completing data authentication using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number, you can finally set the MPIN.
  5. After successfully setting up the MPIN, you will receive a confirmation message in your registered mobile number.
  1. Using USSD code

Now, you also have the option to facilitate offline UPI transactions. For that, you need to dial a USSD code that will guide you to all the related processes of bank transactions. To set an MPIN offline, follow these steps:

  1. Dial *99# from your phone.
  2. Select the option of “Generate MPIN”.
  3. Enter the last six digits of your debit card and its expiry date and click on “Send”.
  4. You will get the option to input the new MPIN.

After confirming your choice, your unique MPIN will be generated.

How to Change MPIN?

As an added security measure, users are always requested to change their MPIN at regular intervals. To change or reset your MPIN, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your mobile banking app using your credentials or current MPIN.
  2. Go to the "More" option or Settings Section and select "Change MPIN".
  3. Enter your old MPIN and the new PIN you want to set and confirm your selection.
  4. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number to successfully change your MPIN.

You can also change your MPIN using the UPI app. Follow the same steps that are mentioned above to set up an MPIN.
