The deadline to link Aadhaar-PAN cards are fast approaching. All PAN card holders must link their PAN cards with Aadhaar cards to ensure that their PAN card stays active. However, many may have a doubt if it is already linked. Thus, we recommend you to first check if your Aadhaar is linked with your PAN card. The process to check if the Aadhaar is linked with PAN is simple as provided in the article below. If the Aadhaar is not linked with the PAN card, you need to link it within 30 June 2023 by paying a penalty of Rs.1,000.
The government had made it mandatory for taxpayers to link their Aadhaar with their Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards on or before 30 June 2023. If taxpayers do not link their Aadhaar with PAN cards, the PAN cards become inoperative from 1 July 2023. Find out the process to check the Aadhaar-PAN card link status online, offline and through SMS.
There are two ways to check if your Aadhaar and PAN card is linked, which are as follows:
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Under the ‘Quick Links’ heading, click on the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’.
Step 3: Enter the ‘PAN number’ and ‘Aadhaar Number’ and click the ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’ button.
A message regarding your Link Aadhaar status will be displayed on successful validation. The following message will be displayed when your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN card: "Your PAN is already linked to given Aadhaar” (as shown below).
When your Aadhaar-Pan link is in progress, the following message will appear on the screen - “Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation. Please check the status later by clicking on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ link on Home Page.”
When your Aadhaar is not linked with your Pan card, the following message will appear on the screen - “PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ to link your Aadhaar with PAN” (as shown below).
Step 1: Login into the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Go to ‘Dashboard’ on the homepage and click the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option.
Step 3: You can also go to ‘My Profile’ and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option.
When your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN card, the Aadhaar number will be displayed. When your Aadhaar is not linked with your PAN card, ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ will be displayed.
When your request to link your Aadhaar with your PAN card is pending with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for validation, you will have to check the status later.

Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers and click ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’. The PAN-Aadhaar linking status will be displayed on the screen.
Step 1: Write the following SMS - UIDPAN <12 digit Aadhaar number> < 10 digit PAN number>.
Step 2: Send the SMS to ‘567678’ or ‘56161’.
Step 3: Wait for the response from the government service.
When the Aadhaar is linked with PAN, the message will appear as follows - “Aadhaar is already associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.”
When the Aadhaar is not linked to PAN, the message will appear as follows - “Aadhaar is not associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.”
When your Aadhaar is not linked with your PAN card, you should request for Aadhaar-PAN linking by paying a late penalty of Rs.1,000 on the Income Tax website. Step 1: Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Under the ‘Quick Links’ heading, click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’.
Step 3: Enter the ‘PAN Number’ and ‘Aadhaar Number’ and click the ‘Validate’ button.
Step 4: Click on ‘Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax’ button.
Step 5: Enter PAN, mobile number and click ‘Continue’ button.
Step 6: Click ‘Proceed’ button under the ‘Income Tax’ tab.
Step 7: Pay the challan amount and click ‘Continue’.
Step 8: Under the ‘Quick Links’ heading, click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’.
Step 9: Enter the PAN and Aadhaar and click the ‘Validate’ button.
Step 10: Enter the Aadhaar number, mobile number, OTP and click ‘Validate’
The request for Aadhaar-PAN linking will be sent to the UIDAI for validation.
You can also visit a PAN card centre and submit the Aadhaar-PAN card linking request form for linking the two cards.
The PAN-Aadhaar linking was free till 31 March 2022. If you linked PAN-Aadhaar after 31 March 2022, but before 30 June 2022, a penalty of Rs.500 was imposed. However, after 30 June 2022, a penalty of Rs.1,000 is imposed to link PAN with an Aadhaar card. Thus, you must first pay the penalty of Rs.1,000 to link your Aadhaar with your PAN before 30 June 2023. When the PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked before 30 June 2023, PAN cards will become inoperative from 1 July 2023.
According to Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, taxpayers with a PAN card should link it to their Aadhaar cards. Thus, all taxpayers must mandatorily link their PAN with their Aadhaar cards by 30 June 2023 by paying the penalty of Rs.1,000 else their PAN cards will become inoperative.
However, Non-Residents Indians (NRIs), citizens aged above 80 years, and residents of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir need not link their Aadhaar with PAN cards since they come under the exempt category. Thus, check your Aadhaar-PAN link status to find out if your Aadhaar is linked with your PAN card. If it is not linked, ensure to link it by 30 June 2023 to prevent your PAN card from being inoperative.

You must also have Aadhaar linked mobile number for which the OTP will be sent for verification to link your Aadhaar with PAN card. You must also pay the penalty before sending the request for linking Aadhaar with your PAN card.
You must rectify the mismatches in the details of your PAN card and Aadhaar card. The information provided in your PAN card and Aadhaar card, such as name, address, etc., should be accurate and match each other. If there are any errors, update the information in your PAN card or Aadhaar card by visiting the NSDL portal/PAN centres or UIDAI portal/Aadhaar card centres, respectively.
No. The details in your PAN and Aadhaar must match to link your Aadhaar with PAN card. However, where there is a demographic mismatch in Aadhaar and PAN cards, such as name, date of birth and gender, you can choose the biometric-based authentication process to link your Aadhaar with PAN. The biometric-based authentication process is available at dedicated centres operated by PAN service providers, i.e. Protean and UTIITSL.
