The two horizontal lines in the symbol represent the national flag and also represent an equal sign in mathematics.
The Rupee symbol “₹” was conceived and designed by Udaya Kumar, a postgraduate from IIT Bombay. The Union Ministry chose this symbol from more than 3,000 entries received in an open contest among resident Indians. After the new symbol was finalised, the new identity was implemented through various computer applications and digital technology.
