The Government of India uses the Aadhaar card to provide many services to Indian citizens. Aadhaar card widely serves as proof of address and identity. It plays a vital role in India’s transition to becoming a more digital economy and is one of the pillars of Digital India. Aadhaar has played a key role in combating corruption, a notable example being the reduction in the diversion of food grains.
The government is now providing Aadhaar cards for children under five as well. It is called ‘Baal Aadhaar’. In this article, we will discuss the steps for Baal Aadhaar card online registration.
The Baal Aadhaar card is a 12-digit unique identification number issued to children below five years old. It is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The Baal Aadhaar card is linked to the Aadhaar card of one of the parents, and no biometric data is required to get it.
You can do the Baal Aadhaar card registration both offline as well as online. In case you find the online mode not very convenient, you can visit your nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre for offline registration. One parent will have to submit their Aadhaar card as well.
Here are the steps for Baal Aadhaar card online registration:
Step 1: Visit the official UIDAI website.
Step 2: Select the language you want to view the website.
Step 3: Click on ‘My Aadhaar’ and click on ‘Book an Appointment’ option.
Step 4: Under the option ‘Book an Appointment at a UIDAI-run Aadhaar Seva Kendra’, select the city where you want to book an appointment and click ‘Proceed to Book Appointment.
Step 5: On the next page, enter your mobile number and captcha and click ‘Get OTP’.
Step 6: Enter the OTP and select the date of your appointment.
Step 7: You will be notified about your appointment via SMS.
Step 8: Visit the Aadhaar centre on the date of appointment.
Step 9: The parent whose Aadhaar card will be linked to the Baal Aadhaar card must submit their biometrics and their Aadhaar card details. The child will not have to provide his or her biometrics.
Step 10: Submit all relevant documents along with the application form that you will fill up at the centre. The original documents will be scanned and returned to the parent.
The Baal Aadhaar card will be sent via post to your home. You will also be able to download it online.
You can also do the Baal Aadhaar card registration offline to get an Aadhaar card for your child. Please note that Aadhaar enrollment is free of cost. Here are the steps to follow to register for Baal Aadhaar card offline:
Step 1: Go to your closest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. You can locate your closest enrolment centre from the official UIDAI website.
Step 2: At the centre, officials will provide you with an application form for a Baal Aadhaar card. Fill it up.
Step 3: The parent whose Aadhaar card will be connected with the Baal Aadhaar card must submit their biometrics and their Aadhaar card. The child will not be asked for his or her biometrics.
Step 4: Submit the relevant documents along with the application form. The original documents will be scanned and returned to the parent.
Step 5: You will get the acknowledgement slip with your registration number. This can be useful while checking the status of your child’s ‘Baal Aadhaar’.
The UIDAI will dispatch the Baal Aadhaar card to your postal address within 60-90 days after registration is done.
Here are the steps to download the Baal Aadhaar card online after the Baal Aadhaar card registration is complete:
Step 1: Log in to the official myAadhaar portal and click on the ‘Download Aadhaar’ tab.
Step 2: Choose the ‘Aadhaar number’ option. If you want, you can also select the ‘Enrollment ID’ and ‘Virtual ID’ options.
Step 3: Enter your Aadhaar number and captcha.
Step 4: Click ‘Send OTP’ and check your phone for OTP.
Step 5: Indicate if you want a masked Aadhaar card and enter OTP.
Step 6: Click the ‘Download Aadhaar’ option. The Baal Aadhaar card will be downloaded.
After downloading your Aadhaar card, you will have to enter a password to access it. The password will have 8 characters. It will be a mixture of the first four letters of your child’s name in capital letters and your child’s year of birth in YYYY format.
For example: If your child’s name is Girish Yadav and the year of birth is 2021, then your password is GIRI2021.
The Baal Aadhaar card is available for children below the age of five. Thus, all children, including newborns, below the age of five are eligible for a Baal Aadhaar card.

The Baal Aadhaar card is printed in blue. As per the Government of India, the blue-coloured letter was introduced to distinguish it as the Aadhaar card for children. It also serves to remind parents to update it when their kids attain the age of five.
The Baal Aadhaar card is valid till children turn five and then becomes invalid. After the age of five, children have to submit his or her biometrics to reactivate it. Children have to update their biometrics once again on turning fifteen.
You can go to the online Aadhaar portal to update your child’s Baal Aadhaar card documents. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Go to the myAadhaar website and click ‘Login’.
Step 2: Enter Baal Aadhaar number and captcha and click on ‘Send OTP’.
Step 3: You will get the OTP on your phone. Enter it and click on ‘Login’.
Step 4: Click on the ‘Document Update’ tab.
Step 5: Verify your demographic details and upload your latest documents for ‘Proof of Identity’ and ‘Proof of Address’.
Please note that to update any demographic information, such as name, gender, or date of birth, you must visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
