Budget 2025 update
The government will issue identity cards and register gig and platform workers on the e-Shram portal, recognising their key role in energising the new-age services economy. It will also extend healthcare facilities to these workers under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), a measure expected to benefit nearly one crore individuals.
What is e -Shram Card?
The Government of India started the e-Shram Yojana to provide social security to workers in unorganised sectors. The objective of the e-Shram card is to collect the database of unorganised workers to provide them with the benefits of various government schemes.
Any person working in an unorganised sector can apply for a an e-Shram card or Shramik card. The labourers working in unorganised sectors can obtain various benefits through the e-Shram card, such as a pension amount after 60 years, death insurance, financial aid in case of incapacity, UAN number, etc.

The unorganised sector comprises establishments or units engaged in selling services, goods, or production and employs less than ten workers. These units are not covered under the ESIC and EPFO. Any worker working in the unorganised sector is considered an unorganised worker. A person who is not a member of ESIC or EPFO and is a home-based worker or self-employed worker is also called an unorganised worker.
Benefits of e-Shram Card
The unorganised worker having an e-Shram card will get the following benefits:
A pension of Rs.3,000 per month after attaining 60 years.
Death insurance of Rs.2,00,000 and financial aid of Rs.1,00,000 in the case of partial handicap of a worker.
If a beneficiary (worker in an unorganised sector with an e-Shram card) dies due to a mishap, the spouse will get all the benefits.
Beneficiaries will receive a 12-digit UAN number valid throughout India.
Integration with Other Schemes and Portals
While the e-Shram card facilitates access to various government schemes, workers must enroll separately in schemes like PM-SYM to receive pension benefits.
Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM): The e-Shram portal is now integrated with the PM-SYM pension scheme. Unorganized workers aged 18-40 can enroll using their Universal Account Number (UAN). Under PM-SYM, beneficiaries receive a monthly pension of ₹3,000 after attaining 60 years. 50% of the contribution is borne by the government and the remaining by the worker.
National Career Service (NCS): Registered workers can access the NCS portal using their UAN to explore job opportunities. This integration enhances employment prospects within the unorganized sector.
Skill India Digital Portal: e-Shram is integrated with the Skill India Digital portal, providing workers with opportunities for skill enhancement and apprenticeships.
Eligibility for e-Shram Card
Any unorganised worker or any person working in the unorganised sector.
Workers should be aged between 16-59 years.
Workers should have a valid mobile number linked with the Aadhaar card.
Workers should not be income tax payers.
e-Shram Card Registration: How to Apply Online?
The application for the e-Shram card can be made through the CSC (Common Service Centre) or the e-Shram portal. The eligible persons can visit the nearest CSC centre and apply for the e-Shram card. They can locate the nearest CSC centre on the e-Shram Portal by entering the state and district for applying for the e-Shram card.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Register on eShram’ option under the ‘One Stop Solution’ tab.
Step 3: Enter the Aadhaar-linked mobile number, captcha code, select if you are an active member of EPFO and ESCI and click on the ‘Send OTP’ button.
Step 4: An OTP will be sent to the mobile number. Enter the OTP, captcha code and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
Step 5: Complete the Aadhaar e-KYC form. Select Register using Aadhaar number, enter your Aadhaar number, select OTP, enter the captcha code, agree to the consent and click ‘Submit’.
Step 6: Enter the OTP, captcha code and click ‘Validate’.
Step 7: Confirm the personal details that appear on the screen and click ‘Continue to Enter Other Details’.
Step 8: Enter the personal information, address, educational qualification, occupation and skills and bank details.
Step 9: Select the self-declaration and click ‘Submit’.
Step 10: The e-Shram card is generated and displayed on the screen. Click on the ‘Download’ option to download the e-Shram card.

Enter the UAN number, date of birth and captcha code and click ‘Generate OTP’.
Enter the OTP, captcha code and click ‘Validate’.
Click on the ‘Download UAN card’ option.
The e-Shram card is generated and displayed on the screen.

e-Shram Card Status Check by Mobile Number
Follow the below process to check e-Shram card status:
Call ‘14434’ from your registered mobile number.
You will get a message about the status of your e-Shram card.
You can also check the status of your e-Shram card by logging into the e-Shram portal by entering your mobile number, Aadhaar number and OTP. Once you log in, you can view the status of your e-Shram card on your dashboard.
