In today’s digital age, an ATM card is a convenient medium to access your bank accounts and conduct multiple financial transactions. All banks offer ATMs or debit cards to their customers, making it easy for them to use them as plastic money and not require them to carry cash everywhere.

If you are a first-time user, you must learn how to insert an ATM card into an ATM and carry out financial transactions. This article will guide you on how to insert an ATM card into the machine to ensure a smooth banking experience.

What is an ATM Machine?

An Automated Teller Machine or ATM is a self-serving banking outlet that enables customers to conduct various financial transactions without the requirement of a bank employee or teller. Through the ATM, you can withdraw cash, transfer money and check the balance of your account.

In addition, an ATM enables you to withdraw cash from any of these machines, irrespective of whether or not you have an account in the same bank. You can withdraw money from your account using these machines 24/7 at your convenience.

Why Do You Need to Insert Your ATM Card into an ATM Machine?

Here are a few reasons why you must insert your card inside the ATM:

  • Identify Your Card

The ATM must identify your debit or ATM card to create a secure connection with the bank. The machine reads the unique data in the chip or magnetic stripe to establish a connection with your bank, including your bank account number.

  • Authentication

Once the machine identifies your ATM card, it checks whether you are a legitimate cardholder. It includes verifying the data stored on your ATM card’s chip or magnetic strip and the PIN connected to your bank account.

  • Ensures Security

Once the authentication process is successful, the machine ensures security by establishing secure communication with the bank. It ensures the integrity and confidentiality of the information exchanges during the financial transaction.

  • Retrieves Your Account Information

When you insert the ATM card inside the machine, you grant permission to the machine to access your bank account data securely. It helps you perform several financial transactions, like cash withdrawals, funds transfers, deposits and balance checks.

  • Transaction Processing

Once your transaction is authorised, the machine will process your request. For instance, if you choose cash withdrawals, the ATM will dispense the amount, lowering your bank balance. Similarly, the machine processes other transactions, like fund transfers or balance checks.

Which Side of the ATM Card is Inserted?

The front side of the ATM card is to be kept on the top while inserting the ATM card into the machine. If the card reader in the machine is horizontally oriented, insert the card with the chip facing upwards. Some ATM cards will have a diagram (or an arrow mark) showing the right side to insert first.

How to Insert an ATM Card into an ATM?

Follow the steps below to insert a debit card in an ATM:

Step 1: Find an ATM nearby of any bank. However, try to go to an ATM of the bank where you have an account. Doing this promises compatibility and minimises transaction fees.

Step 2: Locate the card reader and insert your ATM card into the machine. The machine will clench down on your card and release it after verification of the card.

Step 3: Once you enter your card into the machine, the display will ask you to enter the ATM PIN. Carefully enter the PIN using the number pad and shield it with your hand or body to prevent others from peeping.

Step 4: Select the transaction type, such as cash withdrawals, fund deposits, balance checks, fund transfers, etc. You can select the type by pressing the corresponding button or pressing the option on the touch screen.

Step 5: The machine will provide you with a step-by-step guide for each transaction. Read the instructions carefully to follow them accordingly.

Step 6: If you opt for cash withdrawal from the ATM, enter the desired amount and confirm the transaction. The machine will dispense the amount in cash. If you want to deposit cash in your bank account through an ATM, the machine will guide you accordingly.

Step 7: Once you complete your transaction, the ATM will display the transaction summary on the screen.

Step 8: Collect your ATM or debit card from the machine, if not collected earlier after its verification. In addition, ensure to collect the dispensed cash as well.

Safety Tips for Using ATMs

Keep these safety tips in mind while and after using ATMs:

  • Safeguard Your PIN

When you enter the ATM PIN, cover the number pad to prevent people from peeping. You must also create a unique 4-digit PIN to ensure the security of your funds.

  • Choose the Right Location

Using an ATM in a secured area is essential for your safety. Avoid using ATMs in a deserted place. When you use the ATMs at night, ensure the area is well-lit and no suspicious persons are lurking around.

  • Check the ATM Carefully

Several cases have been registered where fraudsters have rigged ATMs to record your card’s credentials. Hence, to prevent fraud, you must check the card reader and the number pad before inserting your ATM card inside the machine.

  • Ensure the Safety of Your Card

Keep your ATM card in a safe place, such as a cardholder or wallet. Leaving it unattended can lead to theft, which can result in huge financial losses. In addition, you must avoid lending the card to others or writing the ATM PIN on a piece of paper.

  • Check Your Bank Statements

You must check your bank account statements regularly to keep account of your finances. If you record any unauthorised transaction, you must report it to the bank immediately.

With an ATM card, you can withdraw cash from an ATM at your convenience. You can also use the ATM to set up your ATM PIN, deposit cash, or transfer money to another account. However, keep the safety tips in mind while using the ATM to eliminate the risk of fraud.
