FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India using RFID technology to enable automatic toll payments without stopping at toll plazas. FASTag allows seamless toll payments via linked prepaid wallets or bank accounts. It is issued by 30+ banks, including SBI, ICICI, HDFC and fintech companies like Paytm.
Key Highlights:
FASTag is an RFID-based toll payment system operated under the NETC (National Electronic Toll Collection) programme by NPCI. A FASTag tag is affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen and linked to a prepaid account or bank account. When the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the RFID reader scans the tag, and the toll fee is deducted automatically.
FASTag works through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology linked to a prepaid account or bank account. When a vehicle with an active FASTag passes through an RFID-enabled toll plaza, the scanner reads the tag’s unique ID, verifies account details, and deducts the toll amount automatically.
FASTag login allows users to manage their FASTag account online, check balances, recharge, and download statements.
Steps for FasTag login:
To buy FASTag, users can apply online or offline.
Visit a Point of Sale (POS) location at toll plazas or bank branches with documents.
Adding FASTag in a bank account ensures toll charges are deducted directly from the linked account.
While the basic steps are similar, menu and linking options vary across platforms. Once linked, all these apps allow instant recharge using UPI or saved payment methods, and you can also check FASTag balance in seconds.
FASTag KYC update ensures compliance with NPCI FASTag rules and avoids account suspension.
Steps for FASTag KYC update:
FASTag recharge can be done through banks, NPCI FASTag portal, or payment apps.
A new FASTag travel pass has been launched on August 15, 2025, for frequent highway users.
This is a great option if you regularly drive on highways and want to save money.
From February 2025, new rules have been introduced for FASTag users to make toll payments smoother and more secure. Here’s what you need to know in simple terms.
If your FASTag has a low balance or gets blacklisted, you now get 70 minutes to recharge it before you reach a toll booth. This means you won’t be immediately penalised, you have a little over an hour to fix the issue and avoid problems at the toll gate.
If there's a wrong deduction from your FASTag (like getting charged incorrectly), your bank will now wait for 15 days before processing a refund. This new “cooling period” helps reduce fraud and gives time to verify the issue.
To get a FASTag, you must complete full KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. This means submitting valid ID and proof of address. Also, you'll need to upload your vehicle's RC (registration certificate) photo every 3 years to keep the tag active.
You can’t use the same FASTag for more than one vehicle anymore. Each vehicle must have its own unique FASTag. So if you have two cars, you need two tags; no sharing allowed.
If your FASTag hasn’t been used for three months, it will be automatically closed. This helps keep the system clean and ensures unused tags don’t remain active unnecessarily.
FASTags will now be valid for five years. After that, your bank will automatically replace it as part of regular maintenance; you don’t need to worry about doing it yourself.
If you buy a new vehicle and get a new number plate, you must update your FASTag with the new registration number within 90 days. If you don’t, your FASTag could be marked as low balance and might eventually get closed.
A few more important timing-related rules have been added:
Checking FASTag status ensures that the tag is active, linked to your vehicle, and ready for toll payments. Status checks can be done through issuing bank portals, NHAI MyFASTag app, or NPCI’s FASTag status portal.
FASTag balance check can be done via:
To apply for FASTag, you need:
FASTag customer care numbers help users resolve issues like FASTag balance check, KYC updates, recharge failures, status disputes, and complaints. Most banks and the NHAI operate 24x7 toll-free helplines.
1033 is the number for NHAI NETC FASTag users to report complaints, incorrect toll deductions, or lane issues.
