FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India using RFID technology to enable automatic toll payments without stopping at toll plazas. FASTag allows seamless toll payments via linked prepaid wallets or bank accounts. It is issued by 30+ banks, including SBI, ICICI, HDFC and fintech companies like Paytm.

Key Highlights:

  • The FASTag for a vehicle can be obtained by visiting the Point of Sale (POS) locations, IHMCL website, My FASTag App or the NPCI portal.
  • The list of the NETC member banks is available on the NPCI website.
  • Users can check FASTag balance, recharge, and view statements via bank portals, Paytm, GPay, or the NETC FASTag portal.
  • Customer care support is available via bank-specific and NETC toll-free numbers.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is an RFID-based toll payment system operated under the NETC (National Electronic Toll Collection) programme by NPCI. A FASTag tag is affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen and linked to a prepaid account or bank account. When the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the RFID reader scans the tag, and the toll fee is deducted automatically.

How Does FASTag Work?

FASTag works through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology linked to a prepaid account or bank account. When a vehicle with an active FASTag passes through an RFID-enabled toll plaza, the scanner reads the tag’s unique ID, verifies account details, and deducts the toll amount automatically.

  • Tag Activation: FASTag is issued by banks or payment platforms and linked to your vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC).
  • RFID Detection: At the toll booth, an RFID reader scans the FASTag affixed on the windscreen.
  • Auto-Debit: Toll charges are instantly deducted from the linked FASTag wallet or bank account.
  • Confirmation: An SMS alert is sent for every transaction, showing the deducted amount and updated FASTag balance.
  • Central System: All transactions are processed via the NETC FASTag system managed by NPCI for nationwide interoperability.

FASTag login allows users to manage their FASTag account online, check balances, recharge, and download statements.

New FASTag Rules Starting February 2025

From February 2025, new rules have been introduced for FASTag users to make toll payments smoother and more secure. Here’s what you need to know in simple terms.

70-Minute Grace Period for Low Balance or Blacklisted Tags:

If your FASTag has a low balance or gets blacklisted, you now get 70 minutes to recharge it before you reach a toll booth. This means you won’t be immediately penalised, you have a little over an hour to fix the issue and avoid problems at the toll gate.

15-Day Waiting Period for Chargeback Requests:

If there's a wrong deduction from your FASTag (like getting charged incorrectly), your bank will now wait for 15 days before processing a refund. This new “cooling period” helps reduce fraud and gives time to verify the issue.

Mandatory KYC:

To get a FASTag, you must complete full KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. This means submitting valid ID and proof of address. Also, you'll need to upload your vehicle's RC (registration certificate) photo every 3 years to keep the tag active.

One Vehicle, One FASTag Policy:

You can’t use the same FASTag for more than one vehicle anymore. Each vehicle must have its own unique FASTag. So if you have two cars, you need two tags; no sharing allowed.

Auto-Closure of Inactive Tags:

If your FASTag hasn’t been used for three months, it will be automatically closed. This helps keep the system clean and ensures unused tags don’t remain active unnecessarily.

FASTag Validity and Auto-Renewal:

FASTags will now be valid for five years. After that, your bank will automatically replace it as part of regular maintenance; you don’t need to worry about doing it yourself.

Update Vehicle Number in 90 Days:

If you buy a new vehicle and get a new number plate, you must update your FASTag with the new registration number within 90 days. If you don’t, your FASTag could be marked as low balance and might eventually get closed.

Toll Transaction Timings and Rules

A few more important timing-related rules have been added:

  • 70-Minute Rule: If your tag is low on balance or blacklisted, you still have 70 minutes to recharge before passing the toll.
  • 60-Minute Blacklist Rule: If your tag has been blacklisted or inactive for over an hour, it might be rejected at the toll.
  • 15-Minute Transaction Rule: If the payment is not processed within 15 minutes after passing the toll, extra charges could apply.

How to Check FASTag Status?

Checking FASTag status ensures that the tag is active, linked to your vehicle, and ready for toll payments. Status checks can be done through issuing bank portals, NHAI MyFASTag app, or NPCI’s FASTag status portal.

How to Check FASTag Balance?

FASTag balance check can be done via:

  • FASTag Balance Check Number: Give a missed call to the toll-free balance number from your registered mobile.
  • Bank App/Portal: Login to view the available balance.
  • SMS Alerts: Monitor SMS notifications after toll deductions.

Documents Required for FASTag

To apply for FASTag, you need:

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
  • Passport-size photograph
  • KYC documents (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, etc.)
