What is FASTag?
FASTag is an RFID-based toll payment system operated under the NETC (National Electronic Toll Collection) program by NPCI(National Payments Corporation of India). A FASTag tag is affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen and linked to a prepaid account or bank account. When the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the RFID reader scans the tag, and the toll fee is deducted automatically.
How Does FASTag Work?
FASTag works through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology linked to a prepaid account or bank account. When a vehicle with an active FASTag passes through an RFID-enabled toll plaza, the scanner reads the tag’s unique ID, verifies account details, and deducts the toll amount automatically.
Tag Activation: FASTag is issued by banks or payment platforms and linked to your vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC).
RFID Detection: At the toll booth, an RFID reader scans the FASTag affixed on the windscreen.
Auto-Debit: Toll charges are instantly deducted from the linked FASTag wallet or bank account.
Confirmation: An SMS alert is sent for every transaction, showing the deducted amount and updated FASTag balance.
Central System: All transactions are processed via the NETC FASTag system managed by NPCI for nationwide interoperability.

FASTag New Rules April 2026
Cash payments at all National Highway toll plazas are likely be discontinued starting 1 April 2026. Toll plazas will become fully cashless to reduce congestion and promote digital payments.
Key Changes You Must Know:
FASTag is now mandatory for seamless and lowest-cost toll crossing. Ensure your FASTag is active, properly affixed on the windscreen, and has sufficient balance.
UPI: If you don’t have a working FASTag, you can pay toll using UPI (via QR code at the plaza). However, you will be charged 1.25 times the normal toll amount.
Penalty for No Valid FASTag:
Without FASTag or sufficient balance, you risk higher charges.
If toll deduction fails and you receive an e-notice, you must pay the original toll amount within 72 hours.
Payment after 72 hours will result in double the toll fee.
Low Balance or Inactive Tag Risk: Low balance, blacklisted, or non-functional FASTag can lead to failed deduction, e-notice, and potential double charges if not resolved quickly.
What Should You Do Right Now?
Recharge your FASTag immediately and maintain at least ₹300–500 balance.
Enable auto-recharge in your bank/MyFASTag app to avoid low-balance issues.
Check your FASTag status and KYC regularly.
Buy or renew the FASTag Annual Pass before prices increase (new price: ₹3,075 from 1 April 2026).
Note: FASTag users pay the normal toll which is the cheapest and fastest option. Switching to digital payments will save you time, fuel, and extra penalty charges. Stay prepared and enjoy hassle-free highway travel across India’s 1,150+ toll plazas.
Toll Transaction Timings and Rules
A few more important timing-related rules have been added:
70-Minute Rule: If your tag is low on balance or blacklisted, you still have 70 minutes to recharge before passing the toll.
60-Minute Blacklist Rule: If your tag has been blacklisted or inactive for over an hour, it might be rejected at the toll.
15-Minute Transaction Rule: If the payment is not processed within 15 minutes after passing the toll, extra charges could apply.
How to Check FASTag Status?
Checking FASTag status ensures that the tag is active, linked to your vehicle, and ready for toll payments. Status checks can be done through issuing bank portals, NHAI MyFASTag app, or NPCI’s FASTag status portal.
FASTag Balance Check Number: Give a missed call to the toll-free balance number from your registered mobile.
Bank App/Portal: Login to view the available balance.
SMS Alerts: Monitor SMS notifications after toll deductions.
