FASTag is a device for making electronic toll payments using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. A Radio Frequency Identification Chip (RFIC) is embedded in the FASTag sticker, which contains a unique 13-digit electronic code identifying the vehicle. The FASTag sticker is fixed on the vehicle’s windscreen.
When a vehicle with a FASTag sticker approaches a toll plaza, the RFID reader at the plaza scans the RFIC chip on the sticker and deducts the toll amount from the savings or prepaid account linked with that FASTag.
The government has made FASTag mandatory for all four-wheelers in India from 1 January 2021. Personal vehicles without FASTag will have to pay double the toll tax.
On 18 June 2025, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways announced a FASTag-based annual pass designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as vans, cars and jeeps. However, this pass is not issued for commercial vehicles.
Private vehicle owners can get a FASTag annual pass for Rs. 3,000. The pass is valid for a year from its activation or up to 200 trips in a year, whichever comes first. The FASTag annual pass will provide commuters with hassle-free highway travel without restrictions on national highways and expressways throughout the year.
The FASTag annual pass aims to offer uninterrupted, seamless, and cost-effective travel for vehicle owners. It eliminates the need for frequent FASTag top-ups and enhances the driving experience across India’s national road network.
The proposed policy provides a two-payment model for highway usage. The first option is the annual pass of Rs. 3,000, which grants unlimited access to toll roads. The second option is a distance-based model, under which car owners will have to pay a fixed rate of Rs. 50 per 100 km, ideal for occasional travellers who do not use highways frequently.
Vehicle owners must have a FASTag to apply and activate the FASTag annual pass. It will activated and linked directly to their existing FASTag. Thus, vehicle owners who do have an exisiting FASTag account cannot apply for the annual pass.
Additionally, to activate the FASTag annual pass, the vehicle has to meet the eligibility criteria, i.e., FASTag must be properly affixed on the vehicle's windshield, FASTag must be active, FASTag must be linked to a valid Vehicle Registration Number, it must not be blacklisted, etc.
The FASTag annual pass will be prepaid with Rs. 3,000 and toll payments will be managed through the existing FASTag. Users can drive through the national highway or national expressway managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) without worrying about toll payments until the validity period ends or for 200 trips in a year. When the validity of the annual pass expires, users can recharge it normally with Rs. 3,000, like the current FASTag system.
For the FASTag annual pass, a complete round trip through a single toll plaza will be counted as one crossing in a closed-loop toll collection system, i.e., where both the entry and exit are recorded. This rule will prevent disputes of double charges and promote fair usage tracking.
The newly introduced FASTag annual pass costs Rs. 3,000. The fixed pricing is intended to offer savings for regular users who pay tolls for every trip.
The FASTag annual pass will be implemented from 15 August 2025.
People who are already having a FASTag can use the FASTag annual toll pass. The FASTag annual pass can be used only for non-commercial private vehicles, such as jeeps, cars, and vans. Commercial vehicles, such as buses, trucks, and taxis, cannot apply for the FASTag annual pass. People who regularly travel through cities or who frequently visit their hometowns will benefit from the FASTag annual pass.
