In this article, you can discover the reasons why there has been a fall in the GST collections with analysis on the state-wise GST collections for August 2025.

Analysis of the GST Collections August 2025

  • The GST collections for August 2025 have increased compared to the previous financial year, showing a revived tax base and improved compliance levels.
  • Gross GST collections for August 2025 work out to Rs.1,86,315 crore, which is lower than last month’s figures.
  • Year-on-year data indicates that August 2025 collections are 6.5% higher than those of August 2024, when they stood at Rs.1,74,962 crore.
  • Key components include CGST at Rs.34,076 crores, SGST at Rs.42,854 crores, IGST at Rs.97,186 crores, and Cess at Rs.12,199 crores.
  • Revenue from domestic transactions have grown by 9.6% year-on-year, while revenue from imports have seen a fall by 1.2%.

  • The net GST collections for August 2025 are Rs.1,66,956 crore, indicating a growth of 10.7% as compared to the previous year.
  • The comparatively lower GST collections in August 2025 were attributed to the monsoon-driven lower demand for products and services.
  • There is increased anticipation among consumers around the GST rate rejig and reforms. It is expected around the time of Diwali in October 2025. Consumers are now in a "wait-and-watch" mode, including businesses, which might have led to moderate collections in August 2025.
  • Anticipation is building for the upcoming 56th GST Council meeting, where rate slabs may be merged into fewer categories to simplify the overall tax structure.
