PAN Aadhaar link is mandatory for individuals holding a PAN in India to keep it operative for tax filing, banking, and financial transactions. The Pan and Aadhaar link process can be completed online through the Income Tax e-filing portal with or without login. A Rs. 1,000 penalty is applicable for delayed linking. Non-linking can render PAN inoperative under current rules.

The PAN and Aadhaar link is the process of connecting your PAN with your Aadhaar number to verify your identity and prevent duplicate PANs. All taxpayers in India must keep their PAN Aadhaar link active.
The Indian Government has collected over Rs. 600 crore as penalty from taxpayers who failed to complete the PAN Aadhaar link within the prescribed timelines. Despite repeated extensions, a significant number of PANs remain unlinked. This has led to large-scale penalty collections and PANs becoming inoperative.
A Rs. 1,000 penalty is applicable for completing the Pan and Aadhaar link after the deadline. The penalty must be paid before submitting the linking request on the Income Tax e-filing portal. Without payment, the PAN Aadhaar link request cannot be processed.
If your PAN card has become inoperative due to not being linked with Aadhaar, you can reactivate it by paying the applicable penalty and submitting a PAN Aadhaar link request. The process involves two main steps:
This is applicable to all PAN cardholders who have obtained a PAN card with an Aadhaar number. Documents necessary for the same:
Follow the steps given below to pay the penalty:
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
Step 2: Enter the ‘PAN’ number under ‘PAN/TAN’ and ‘Confirm PAN/TAN’ column, enter mobile number and click the ‘Continue’ button.
Step 3: After OTP verification, it will be redirected to the e-Pay Tax page. Click the ‘Continue’ button.
Step 4: Click the ‘Proceed’ button under the ‘Income Tax’ tab.
Step 5: Select Assessment Year as ‘2025-26’, ‘Type of Payment (Minor Head)’ as ‘Other Receipts (500)’ and Sub-type of Payment as ‘Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar’ and click the ‘Continue’ button.
Step 6: The applicable amount will be pre-filled against the ‘Others’ option. Click the ‘Continue’ button and make the payment.
After making the payment, link your PAN with your Aadhaar card as soon as possible.
Note: You can pay the late penalty on the Income Tax e-filing portal via net banking, debit card, NEFT/RTGS, over the counter, or payment gateway. The payment gateway option is available only for accounts held with authorised banks.
This applies to all PAN holders, including those issued with an Aadhaar enrolment ID before 1st October 2024. You can link your Aadhaar with PAN online through the Income Tax e-filing portal in two ways:
This method allows linking without logging into the portal.
Step 1: Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click the ‘Validate’ button.
Step 3: Enter your name as per your Aadhaar card and mobile number and click the ‘Link Aadhaar’ button.
Step 4: Enter the OTP received on your mobile number and click the ‘Validate’ button.
Step 5: The request for PAN Aadhaar linking will be sent to the UIDAI for validation.
If the payment details are not verified on the e-filing portal:
This method requires logging into your e-filing account.
Step 1: Register yourself at the Income Tax e-filing portal, if you are not already registered.
Step 2: Log in to the e-filing portal of the income tax department by entering the user ID.
Step 3: Confirm your secure access message and enter the password. And click ‘Continue’ to proceed further.
Step 4: After logging in to the website, click on ‘Link Aadhaar’. Alternatively, go to ‘My Profile’ and select ‘Link Aadhaar’ under the ‘Personal Details’ option.
Step 5: Enter your Aadhaar number and click the ‘Validate’ button.
Step 6: A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar number has been successfully linked to your PAN card.
After submitting your PAN Aadhaar link request, UIDAI will process it, and your PAN will be reactivated within 7-30 days.
To check the PAN and Aadhaar link status, follow these steps:
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.
Step 3: Now, if your PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, you will see a pop-up that your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar.
A Rs. 1,000 penalty must be paid on the Income Tax e-filing portal before linking your PAN with Aadhaar. PAN holders issued via Aadhaar enrolment ID after 1st October 2024 can link their PAN Aadhaar free of charge by 31st December 2025.

Completing the Pan and Aadhaar link is essential to keep your PAN operative and avoid financial disruptions. Delayed linking attracts a Rs. 1,000 penalty and may block tax filing and banking transactions.
