The last date for linking Aadhaar with PAN has been extended to 31st March 2023.
An Aadhaar card contains a unique 12-digit number issued to every citizen in India by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It is an identification number that helps access the cardholder’s details from the government database, such as biometrics and contact information.
Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, being a resident of India, can enrol to obtain an Aadhaar number voluntarily. The enrolment process is free of cost. Once an individual enrols, their details are permanently stored in the database. One person cannot have multiple Aadhaar numbers.
If you hold a PAN and are eligible to get Aadhaar or already have an Aadhaar number, you must inform the income tax department. You can do this by linking PAN to Aadhaar. If you fail to do PAN-Aadhar linking, your PAN will become ‘inoperative’.
The PAN-Aadhaar linking date has been extended from 31st March 2022 to 31st March 2023. The final day to link PAN and Aadhaar without paying a fine, however, was March 31, 2022. Now, a fine of Rs. 1,000 must be paid for linking PAN-Aaadhaar.
Note that if you file the income tax returns without linking PAN-Aadhaar, the income tax department will not process the returns until PAN and Aadhaar are linked. People can visit the official e-filing website of the department to link the two identities in both cases– identical names in the two databases or in a case where there is a minor mismatch.
If you are not sure if your PAN and Aadhaar cards are linked, you may follow these steps to confirm:
1. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal. Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ under the quick links on the homepage.
2. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.
Now, if your PAN & Aadhaar is not linked, you will see a pop-up as shown below. You can follow these steps to link them. And if they are already linked, you can proceed with your Income Tax Filing at ClearTax.
Two main steps for linking your Aadhar with PAN:
I. Payment of fee on NSDL portal under Major head (0021) and Minor head (500) for AY 2023-24.
II. Submit the Aadhaar-PAN link request.

Step 1: Go to the tax payment page and select Challan no./ITNS 280 under the non-TDS/TCS category.
Step 2: On the next screen, select head ‘(0021)’ and then ‘(500)’
Step 3: Scroll down to select the mode of payment and enter the required details (like your PAN, for Assessment Year select 2023-24, address etc.)

It can be done by sending an SMS to either 567678 or 56161. Send SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number in the following format:
UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><Space><10 digit PAN>

However, if you have already paid the fee on the NSDL portal, you can submit the link request only after 4-5 working days.

Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ button.
Step 6: A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar number has been successfully linked to your PAN card.
How to solve error EF30032 “The PAN is already a client for an ERI”? How to solve error EF500096 “This PAN is already client until date”?
An ERI (e-return Intermediary) is an individual or organisation who is authorised to file tax returns on behalf of taxpayers.
A taxpayer cannot be a client for multiple ERIs. When your PAN is already a client for an ERI (like Cleartax), you will see this error while linking PAN-Aadhaar.
You can simply deactivate the previous E-return Intermediary by following the below steps:
Step 1: Log in to the e-filing portal and select E-return Intermediary from the dropdown as shown below
Step 2: Click on Deactivate
Step 3: Selected ERI will be deactivated successfully. After successful deactivation of your previous ERI, you can add ClearTax as your ERI and proceed with your ITR filing.
How to solve the error EF500058 “The PAN is not a valid client for this ERI”?
If you face this error when registering your PAN as a client, it means:
How to rectify the error?
Step 1: Log in to your income tax account. Click on Authorised Partners >>My E return Intermediary. You can see two tabs, Active and Inactive, as shown below:
Once ClearTax ERI appears in the active tab, you may proceed with your return filing on ClearTax.
If ClearTax ERI does not appear in the active tab, you must register your PAN by authenticating it through an OTP on ClearTax.
The authentication fails due to a mismatch in the data between your PAN and Aadhaar. You can check for the correctness of the data such as name, date of birth, mobile number, amongst others.
Initiate the Aadhaar linking process, enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, and the name, date of birth and mobile number details as per your Aadhaar card, the income tax department will send an OTP on the registered mobile number to enable the linking. In the case of a mismatch in the date of birth, you need to update your Aadhaar card data.
You need to quote your Aadhaar number for the purpose of filing your income tax return. In the absence of an Aadhaar number, you need to quote Aadhaar enrolment number.
Only as resident Indian can get an Aadhaar number. An individual whose stay in India is 182 days or more in the previous 12 months, immediately before the date of an Aadhaar application is a resident. An NRI need not obtain Aadhaar and link their PAN with Aadhaar.
