Transactions are carried out maintaining the highest possible security by incorporating a three-layer security. The third or last layer of the system involves OTP verification through SMS sent to the registered mobile number. This minimises the risk of your card and PIN being lost/stolen.
As RuPay is an India-based organisation, your valuable transactional data does not pass outside India. On the other hand, the data of transactions made through international payment networks goes outside the country.
The maintenance cost of these cards is minimal, or they come free of cost. Hence, the rural SBI branches usually issue such cards for the account holders in those regions.

The process of activating your SBI RuPay debit card is quite easy and simple. But please note that to use this method, your mobile number must be registered with your SBI account. Here is how you can activate your card through SMS using the following steps:
Step 1: Firstly, you will have to SMS “PIN <space> last four digits of your debit card <space> last four digits of your account number” to 567676.
Step 2: Upon successful verification of your account number and debit card number, you will get a one-time password/PIN (OTP).
Step 3: You will have to visit your nearest SBI ATM, punch your card and select the “PIN Change”.
Step 4: Then enter your OTP to continue with setting up a new PIN.
Step 5: Then enter your desired PIN and confirm the same.
The daily purchase limit for the SBI virtual RuPay debit card is Rs.50,000. It cannot be used to withdraw cash from ATMs.
For the SBI Platinum international RuPay debit card and SBI IOCL co-branded contactless RuPay debit card, the minimum cash withdrawal limit in an ATM is Rs. 100, while the maximum limit is Rs. 20,000 in a single day.
For the SBI Platinum international RuPay debit card, the limit for POS transactions and withdrawals is Rs. 2,00,000, and for online transactions is Rs. 5,00,000. For the SBI IOCL co-branded contactless global RuPay debit card (global), the POS or online transaction limit is Rs. 75,000, while it is Rs. 2,00,000 for the SBI IOCL co-branded contactless global RuPay debit card (Platinum).
Here is the step-by-step guide to applying for a RuPay debit card in SBI:
Step 1: Log in to your SBI net banking portal using your credentials.
Step 2: From the ‘e-Services’ tab, click on the ‘Debit Card Services’ and then on ‘ATM card cum Debit Card’ option.
Step 3: Click ‘Request/Track Debit Card’.
Step 4: Select your account number, select the RuPay card that you want to avail, and click ‘Submit’.
Step 5: Next, it will ask you to enter an OTP to validate the application request.
Step 6: Enter the OTP to complete the application for a RuPay debit card.
If you are willing to make any bill payment online, you can use your SBI RuPay debit card to pay all your bills. Here is the step-by-step guide:
Step 1: On the payment gateway page, you will find several options, such as paying using a debit card, credit card, UPI, or internet banking. Select the debit card option here.
Step 2: Then, you will have to enter the 16-digit number of your SBI RuPay debit card followed by the expiry date.
Step 3: Enter the CVV code, which is a three- or four-digit number that proves that you are authorised to use the card.
Step 4: Once you proceed to the next step, you will be asked to enter an OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
Step 5: Submit the OTP to complete your transaction using your SBI RuPay debit Card.
SBI has segregated customer care for the SBI RuPay debit card. In case the cardholder encounters any issues or needs any help or assistance, they can directly dial up SBI customer care. It is a 24 x7 toll-free number; you can also mail your issue to customer care at contactcentre@sbi.co.in.
