With the aim of improving rural penetration of financial services in the country, NPCI launched RuPay, a payment service network, to create a secure system in India. Now, all major banks, like the State Bank of India, offer RuPay debit cards. In this article, we will deep dive into the SBI RuPay debit card and all that you must know.

What Is SBI RuPay Debit Card?

RuPay is a multinational payment service network launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) with the objective of providing a low-cost alternative to international payment networks like Visa, MasterCard, etc. SBI, one of the country's largest commercial banks, offers customers different SBI RuPay debit cards.

These cards can be used for cash withdrawals or deposits from ATMs, POS terminals and various e-commerce platforms. These cards are favoured by merchants and customers, as they do not levy any transaction charge. Some RuPay cards offer reward points, discounts on fuel transactions and other benefits. 

Types of SBI RuPay Debit Cards

SBI offers different types of RuPay debit cards, which are as follows:

SBI Virtual RuPay Debit Card

It is a type of virtual RuPay debit card issued by the SBI which comes with a wide range of features that simplify monetary transactions for people. Here are some of the features of the card:

  • This card allows you to make convenient payments for domestic and international e-commerce transactions.
  • There are no additional charges associated with this card.
  • Also, you earn reward points on making payments, which can be redeemed later to earn discounted coupons.
  • No issuance fees or annual maintenance fees.

SBI Platinum International RuPay Debit Card

SBI RuPay platinum international debit card offers access to exclusive coupons and earn rewards on your purchases. Here are some of the features of the card:

  • It also allows the user to make international payments.
  • It offers wider access to online transactions.
  • It can be used for shopping at over 52 lakh merchant outlets in India and more than 30 million worldwide.
  • It can be used for bill payments,  booking movie tickets and travel.
  • It offers complimentary airport lounge access, subject to certain conditions.

SBI IOCL Co-Branded Contactless RuPay Debit Card

The SBI IOCL co-branded RuPay debit card is specially designed to earn additional reward points at all IOCL retail outlets. Here are some of the features of the card:

  • It can be used to purchase goods at merchant establishments as well as for online payments.
  • It allows cash withdrawals in India and across the globe.
  • It can be at ATMs, PoS and E-commerce.
  • You can reward points on this card for every Rs. 200 that you spend on fuel at all IOCL petrol pumps.

SBI RuPay Debit Card Benefits 

Here are some of the benefits of using an SBI RuPay debit card:

  • Secured Transactions  

Transactions are carried out maintaining the highest possible security by incorporating a three-layer security. The third or last layer of the system involves OTP verification through SMS sent to the registered mobile number. This minimises the risk of your card and PIN being lost/stolen. 

  • Data within the Country

As RuPay is an India-based organisation, your valuable transactional data does not pass outside India. On the other hand, the data of transactions made through international payment networks goes outside the country.

  • Rural Penetration 

The maintenance cost of these cards is minimal, or they come free of cost. Hence, the rural SBI branches usually issue such cards for the account holders in those regions.

It is universally designed to become compatible with any payment channels, whether online platforms, ATMs, or POS.

RuPay is a domestic card scheme launched by NPCI. It was specially designed for Indians to promote low-cost payment solutions within the country. It offers low-cost payment network alternatives to international giants such as Visa, MasterCard, etc.

Documents for SBI RuPay debit Card

To apply for an SBI RuPay debit card, the account holder must complete the KYC verification. If not, KYC documents such as ID proof, and address proof need to be submitted. Otherwise, only the following documents are required to apply for a RuPay card:

  • Debit card application form (duly filled)
  • Recent passport-size photograph

SBI RuPay Debit Card Charges

Here are the fees and charges of SBI RuPay debit cards:

SBI Virtual RuPay Debit Card

  • New card issuance charge = Nil
  • Debit card annual maintenance charges= Nil
  • Debit card replacement charges= Rs. 300 plus GST
  • Pin regeneration or duplicate PIN charges= Rs. 50 plus GST

SBI Platinum International RuPay Debit Card

  • New card issuance charge = Rs. 300 plus GST
  • Debit card annual maintenance charges= Rs. 250 plus GST
  • Debit card replacement charges= Rs. 300 plus GST
  • Pin regeneration or duplicate PIN charges= Rs. 50 plus GST

SBI IOCL Co-Branded Contactless RuPay Debit Card

  • New card issuance charge = Nil for Global, Rs. 300 plus GST for Platinum
  • Debit card annual maintenance charges= Rs. 125 plus GST for Global, Rs. 250 for Platinum
  • Debit card replacement charges= Rs. 300 plus GST
  • Pin regeneration or duplicate PIN charges= Rs. 50 plus GST

How to Activate Your SBI RuPay Debit Card?

The process of activating your SBI RuPay debit card is quite easy and simple. But please note that to use this method, your mobile number must be registered with your SBI account. Here is how you can activate your card through SMS using the following steps:

Step 1: Firstly, you will have to SMS “PIN <space> last four digits of your debit card <space> last four digits of your account number” to 567676.

Step 2: Upon successful verification of your account number and debit card number, you will get a one-time password/PIN (OTP).

Step 3: You will have to visit your nearest SBI ATM, punch your card and select the “PIN Change”.

Step 4: Then enter your OTP to continue with setting up a new PIN.

Step 5: Then enter your desired PIN and confirm the same. 

SBI RuPay Debit Card Limit

The daily purchase limit for the SBI virtual RuPay debit card is Rs.50,000. It cannot be used to withdraw cash from ATMs.

For the SBI Platinum international RuPay debit card and SBI IOCL co-branded contactless RuPay debit card, the minimum cash withdrawal limit in an ATM is Rs. 100, while the maximum limit is Rs. 20,000 in a single day. 

For the SBI Platinum international RuPay debit card, the limit for POS transactions and withdrawals is Rs. 2,00,000, and for online transactions is Rs. 5,00,000. For the SBI IOCL co-branded contactless global RuPay debit card (global), the POS or online transaction limit is Rs. 75,000, while it is Rs. 2,00,000 for the SBI IOCL co-branded contactless global RuPay debit card (Platinum).

How to Apply RuPay Debit Card SBI?

Here is the step-by-step guide to applying for a RuPay debit card in SBI:

Step 1: Log in to your SBI net banking portal using your credentials.

Step 2: From the ‘e-Services’ tab, click on the ‘Debit Card Services’ and then on ‘ATM card cum Debit Card’ option. 

Step 3: Click ‘Request/Track Debit Card’.

Step 4: Select your account number, select the RuPay card that you want to avail, and click ‘Submit’.

Step 5: Next, it will ask you to enter an OTP to validate the application request.

Step 6: Enter the OTP to complete the application for a RuPay debit card.

SBI RuPay Debit Card Bill Payments

If you are willing to make any bill payment online, you can use your SBI RuPay debit card to pay all your bills. Here is the step-by-step guide:

Step 1: On the payment gateway page, you will find several options, such as paying using a debit card, credit card, UPI, or internet banking. Select the debit card option here.

Step 2: Then, you will have to enter the 16-digit number of your SBI RuPay debit card followed by the expiry date.

Step 3: Enter the CVV code, which is a three- or four-digit number that proves that you are authorised to use the card.

Step 4: Once you proceed to the next step, you will be asked to enter an OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

Step 5: Submit the OTP to complete your transaction using your SBI RuPay debit Card.

SBI RuPay Debit Card Customer Care

SBI has segregated customer care for the SBI RuPay debit card. In case the cardholder encounters any issues or needs any help or assistance, they can directly dial up SBI customer care. It is a 24 x7 toll-free number; you can also mail your issue to customer care at contactcentre@sbi.co.in.

The SBI RuPay Debit Card is a tie-up between NPCI and the State Bank of India, facilitating payment solutions.
