What is URN?

URN or Update Request Number is a unique number allocated to you when you apply for correction in your Aadhaar data. You receive a URN irrespective of whether you have applied for the change through online or offline channels.

The URN is automatically generated by the system on submission of a request for change. A URN is a 14-digit number that looks like this: 0344/00225/02334.

You can use the URN to check your Aadhaar update status anytime. You must keep your URN safe as it is required to track the Aadhaar URN Status. If you lose the URN, you will not be able to know the outcome of your request for updating your Aadhaar data. 

How to get an Aadhaar URN number?

Given below is a step-by-step process to get the URN number:

Step 1: Go to the myAadhaar portal.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Login’ button.

Step 3: Enter your Aadhaar number, captcha code and click the ‘Send OTP’ button.

Step 4: Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number and click the ‘Login’ button.

Step 5: Click the ‘Name/Gender/Date of Birth & Address Update’ tab.

Step 6: Select the details you want to update, such as name, gender, date of birth or address.

Step 7: Enter the updated details, upload the relevant document, and click the 'Submit' button.

Step 8: On submission of the form, you will get the 14-digit URN.

How to check the URN status online?

Checking the URN status has become an effortless task with the help of myAadhaar portal. Here are the steps that you need to follow to check URN status online:

  • Go to the myAadhaar portal.
  • Click on the ‘Check Enrolment & Update Status’ tab.
  • In the respective input field, enter your URN Number.
  • Make sure that you have entered the correct details because you would otherwise not be able to check the Aadhaar URN status.
  • Now enter the Captcha code to complete the verification process.
  • Click on the button 'Submit'. You will now be able to check URN Status Online.

The information on the result page will clearly indicate the status of your update request. You can see three possible results –

  • If the request has been successful, it means that the changes have been made successfully in the Aadhaar, and you can now download the updated copy of your e-Aadhaar. You will also receive the same by post.
  • If the request is under process, it means that the changes are yet to be approved. You need to check in after a few more days.
  • If the request has been rejected, it means the changes have not been made, and you will need to apply for the same again.

How to check URN status offline?

You can check your Aadhaar URN status offline by visiting a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Follow these steps:

  • Visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
  • Carry your acknowledgement slip that includes the URN number.
  • Provide your Aadhaar number and URN to the official at the counter.
  • The official will input the URN into the UIDAI system.
  • The system will display your Aadhaar update status — approved, under review, or rejected.

Make sure to carry a valid photo ID for identity verification, if required.

Invalid URN

When you enter your URN, you need to enter it without slashes. Even when you enter the right URN, it may show "URN Number Invalid". This means that the UIDAI has not yet processed your URN. In such a case, you can contact the UIDAI by writing a mail to - ‘help@uidai.gov.in’ or visiting the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre to find out the status of your URN.

Reasons for Rejection

Your Aadhaar update request may be rejected by UIDAI for the following reasons:

  • The uploaded documents are not self-attested.
  • Incorrect or mismatched supporting documents were submitted.
  • Biometric verification was unsuccessful or skipped.
  • The photograph captured is unclear or not as per UIDAI standards.
  • Typographical errors were found in the application form.
  • Incomplete or invalid address/information entered.

How to update your Aadhaar?

It is not uncommon to find typographical mistakes in Aadhaar cards. It is because the operator might err while entering the details in the system. There could be errors related to name, address, age or other aspects of the Aadhaar. It is essential to get these errors rectified immediately. You can rectify these errors online or offline.

Online – Through the myAadhaar Portal

If you have your mobile number registered with your Aadhaar number, you can easily update the information by yourself. If the mobile number is not linked with the Aadhaar, you need to visit the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre.

Here is the process to make changes in Aadhaar through the myAadhaar portal:

  • Go to the myAadhaar portal.
  • Click on the ‘Login’ button.
  • Enter your Aadhaar number, captcha code and click the ‘Send OTP’ button.
  • Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number and click the ‘Login’ button.
  • Click the ‘Name/Gender/Date of Birth & Address Update’ tab.
  • Select the details you want to update, such as name, gender, date of birth or address.
  • Then you will be asked to upload the self-attested copies of the required documents.
  • Once you have completed the process, you will get a URN which can be used to check the Aadhaar URN status online.

If you do not have access to the internet, you can get the changes done at your nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre. You will get the URN which can be used to check the application status online.

Offline – Through Aadhaar Enrolment Centre

If there is no internet access, you can update your Aadhaar by visiting the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre. 

  • Get the Aadhaar update form from the nearest Aadhaar centre. 
  • Fill in the details and submit it to the respective authority along with self-attested copies of the documents.
