It is not mandatory to provide a mobile number for Aadhaar enrollment. However, it is recommended to provide a mobile number while enrolling for an Aadhaar card to get updates regarding your Aadhaar application status and get various services based on Aadhaar through OTP-based authentication.

The significance of Aadhaar has grown since the Government of India decided to link it with various documents and services. Though it is not mandatory to link your Aadhaar with your mobile number, it is beneficial to link them as it helps access various government services that require Aadhaar-based OTP verification.

You may have to link your Aadhaar number in these two scenarios: You already have an updated mobile number, and you need to link the new number to your Aadhaar card, or your Aadhaar card does not have a mobile number linked to it.

Link Mobile Number To Aadhar Card Online For The First Time (Offline Method)

Unfortunately, this process cannot be done online. You must visit the nearest Aadhaar centre to link your Aadhaar with your mobile number. Here is the process for the same:

Step 1: Collect the Aadhaar update form from the nearest centre.

Step 2: Enter the accurate information along with your mobile number. Alternatively, you can also download the form from UIDAI website.

Step 3: Mention on the form that only your phone number needs to be updated. Submit it to the concerned office along with a photocopy of your Aadhaar card and one photo ID proof such as a PAN card, voter ID, passport, etc.

Step 4: The next step is to verify your thumb impression and biometrics, which will be matched with those recorded during the Aadhaar application process.

Step 5: The officer will give you an acknowledgement slip. The update should take place within five days. However, as per the UIDAI website, it could even take up to 10 days.

How to Book Appointment for Aadhaar Mobile Link?

You can visit the nearest Aadhaar centre directly to link your Aadhaar card with your mobile number. Alternatively, you can also book an appointment at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra to skip the waiting line at the Aadhaar centre and link your Aadhaar with your mobile number. Follow the below process to book an appointment:

Step 1: Visit the UIDAI website.

Step 2: Navigate to the ‘My Aadhaar’ section and click ‘Book an Appointment’ under the ‘Get Aadhaar’ heading.

Step 3: Select your city/location and click ‘Proceed to Book Appointment’.

Enter your mobile number and captcha code and click ‘Get OTP’. Enter the OTP and click ‘Verify OTP’.

Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number and name and tick the mobile number option. Then, enter your mobile number and verify it. 

Step 5: Enter the appointment details and proceed. You can choose to make the payment online or at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra for linking your mobile number with your Aadhaar. You will receive an acknowledgement slip containing the appointment details.

Step 6: Visit the Aadhaar Seva Kendra at the time of your appointment, obtain the Aadhaar update form and complete your Biometrics verification.

Aadhar Card Link With Mobile Number (Online Method) (Currently Unavailable)

Here is a guide to linking your Aadhaar card to your mobile number online without visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra:

Step 1: Go to the Indian Postal Service website link.

Step 2: Enter details- your name, address, Pincode, mobile number, and email address.

Step 3: Under ‘Service’, choose ‘PPB- Aadhaar Service’ from the drop-down menu.

Step 4: Select ‘UIDAI-Mobile/Email to Aadhaar linking/update’.

Step 5: Once you fill in all the necessary fields, click on the ‘Request OTP’ button.

Step 6: Next, enter the OTP received on your mobile number.

Step 7: Now click on ‘Confirm Service Request’. You will receive a reference number where you can track your application status.

Step 8: The service request will be sent to the post office near you on successful submission.

Step 9: The verification process will be done by an officer assigned the task. The officer will visit your address and verify using a mobile biometric device (For iris, fingerprints and photographs).

Step 10: They will complete the update/linking process and charge you a fee for the service.

What Are The Documents Required To Link Your Aadhaar Card?

No document is needed to link the mobile number with the Aadhaar. However, you must carry the Aadhaar card when visiting the Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Aadhar Link With Mobile Number Change

If you change your mobile number, you may have to apply to update the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar card. When you update the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, you will receive Aadhaar-based OTPs on your new mobile number. 

Here is a step-by-step detail to link your Aadhaar card with the changed mobile number:

Step 1: Visit your nearest Aadhaar centre or book an appointment at the Aadhaar centre as provided above.

Step 2: Obtain and fill out the Aadhaar update form. In the form, select the mobile number option to be updated. 

Step 3: Submit the form to the officials along with a photocopy of your Aadhaar card and one proof of photo ID.

Step 4: Provide your biometrics to authenticate your information and pay the service charge.

Step 5: Within 90 days, your mobile number will be updated in the Aadhaar database and the new mobile number will be linked with your Aadhaar card.
