Currently, you cannot close your SBI account online. Instead, you must visit your home branch, obtain the SBI account closure form, and fill it out accurately. Then, submit the account closure form to your home branch along with ID proofs and account items. 

You may need to clear your dues and pay closure fees, if any, before the bank processes your request. Usually, it takes about a week for the SBI bank to close the account after submission.

How to Close an SBI Savings Account Offline?

Here are the steps to close an SBI account offline:

Step 1: Visit the nearest SBI bank branch and get the account closure form.

Step 2: Complete the form by providing your details accurately and submit it at the branch.

Step 3: Attach copies of your identity proof, address proof, original chequebook, original deposit book, and ATM or debit cards.

Step 4: Pay any outstanding fees, if applicable.

The representatives of SBI will process your request and close the account within seven business days, considering the account type and age.

How to Close an SBI Account After Death?

You can close an SBI account after the death of an account holder by submitting the claim settlement form

If you are the nominee, you can close the SBI account of the deceased person by submitting the following documents to the bank branch where the account was held:

  • Claim settlement form in the standard format of the bank 
  • Full details of the accounts of the deceased person
  • Death certificate of the deceased account holder issued by the competent authority
  • Nominee KYC (Know Your Customer) documents

If there is no nomination for the deceased person’s account, the legal heirs must submit the claim settlement form without legal representation to the bank along with the required documents. The claim settlement form without legal representation can also be downloaded from the SBI bank’s website.

The documents required for the closure of an account of a deceased person without a nomination are as follows:

  • For a claim amount below Rs. 5 lakh:
    • Death certificate 
    • KYC documents of all legal heirs
    • Account details of the legal heirs, if available
    • Claim form duly filled and signed by the legal heirs, other than those who signed the disclaimer letter
    • Stamped letter of Indemnity from the legal heirs
    • Letter of disclaimer, if applicable
    • Declaration in the claim form signed by one independent person well known to the family of the deceased, any account holder of SBI known to the family of the deceased or any government official whose signature is verifiable by SBI
  • For a claim amount above Rs. 5 lakh:
    • All documents required for a claim amount below Rs. 5 lakh (As listed above)
    • Declaration in the claim form has to be sworn as an Affidavit before the Notary Public or Judicial Magistrate by one independent person well known to the family of the deceased, any account holder of SBI known to the family of the deceased or any government official whose signature is verifiable by SBI
    • Surety, along with the stamped letter of Indemnity 
    • Details of Sureties along with proof for compilation of the Opinion Report on Sureties
